Monday, October 21, 2013 at 5:30 p.m.

A regular meeting of the Board of Education, District #424, Lester Prairie, McLeod County, Minnesota was held on Monday, October 21st, 2013, at the Lester Prairie Public Schools Media Center.
Meeting was called to order and roll call taken by Acting Chairman, Karla Heigl. The following board members were present: Gregg Machemehl, Karla Heigl (acting chairman), Rawelin Radtke (treasurer), and MerriLea Kyllo (acting clerk). Absent were: Bob Carlson and Matt Klitzke. Administration present: Mike McNulty and Jeremy Schmidt, Guests present: Dave Uecker (custodial supervisor), Blaine Walstrom (Activities Director), and Ivan Raconteur from the Herald Journal Newspaper.
Pledge of Allegiance was led by Karla Heigl.
Motion by Gregg Machemehl and seconded by Rawelin Radtke to approve the consent agenda as modified, to approve the minutes of the regular board meeting of 9/23/13 and Special Board Meeting of 10/10/13, and to pay bills in the amount of $179,014.35 and student activity for $9,283.57. Voting was 4 for and 0 against.
Recognition of Communications Since Last Meeting:
MerriLea Kyllo made note of nice article in the Star Tribune recognizing two of our students, Blair Jilek and Stephanie Lohse, as well as Mr. Bjork Trap, coach. Highlighting the program positively. The Herald Journal also mentioned the program, with a larger article coming in the next edition.
Mr. Schmidt Report: See attachment: School Board Notes, Oct. 21, 2013 for full report. Highlights were recap of We Day Minnesota outing, Celebrate My Drive.
Activities Director Report - by Blaine Walstrom: See full Report attachment dated 10/21/13. Numbers in fall sports and pre-cap of winter sports. Winter sports meeting set for Nov. 7th. Review of moving all practice times to website so parents could get instant alert if it changes.
Superintendent reports: Mr. McNulty gave overview. MSBA conference set for Jan. 15-17, need RSVP ASAP for those able to attend. MASA conference in Duluth Oct. 7-8 gave overview. Election update, posted and mailings to residents completed. Homeless Liaison training completed Oct. 14th.
Facilities Report: See attachment for report dated Oct. 21 for details.
Recap of Board Committee reports (committees with updates listed):
Community Education - Meeting to be scheduled in next two weeks
Facilities/Maintenance - pipes being covered. Rec’d bid from RAM for outdoor storage within budget at $20,000 to $25,000. No other bids received.
Tech/Media - met Oct. 3 (Presentation on BYOD later in meeting)
Activities Committee will be meeting two weeks after fall sports end.
Negotiations - Certified (will meet again on October 28th at 6:30 p.m.)
Policy committee will need to schedule meeting to review Tech policy with needed changes to move ahead with BYOD (Bring your own device)
District student count as of 10/16/13 for K-12 = 421 (up 8 students from last October)
Board voted to approve contracts for Sarah Wojiechowski - Fall Play advisor; Blaine Walstrom - Asst. Girl’s Basketball Coach; Jenni Sebora - Knowledge Bowl Advisor. Motion made by Rawelin Radtke, seconded by Gregg Machemehl. Voting was 4 for, 0 against.
School Finances: Eide Bailly to present audit at November Board meeting.
Motion made by MerriLea Kyllo and seconded by Rawelin Radtke to approve official volleyball coach pay. Vote was 4 for and 0 against.
Mr. McNulty discussed approaching businesses with the idea of business banners in the gym and fields. Idea was favorable but suggested he talked with Booster Club regarding idea.
Video Presentation given on BYOD initiative the Tech committee has been working on with Ms. Buckentin. Board was favorable and Tech committee to move forward with policy and presenting to parents at the parent/teacher conferences.
Report from Mr. McNulty on bussing issues/usage. May need to go to a 5th route or change routes due to increased usage. Will continue to monitor for needed changes.
Next regular school board meeting is set for November 18, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in media center.
