Lester Prairie School Board Minutes
November 18, 2002
School District #424, Lester Prairie, MN 55354
A regular meeting of the Board of Education of District #424, Lester Prairie, McLeod County, MN was held on November 18, 2002 in the school media center. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Fred Blaser at 6:00 p.m. Members present were Vice Chairperson Chester Hoernemann, Treasurer Barry Kyllo, and directors Bob Carlson and Bob Remer. Clerk Nancy Krull arrived around 6:20. Staff members present were Dr. James Redfield, Pam Lukens, Elementary Principal; Susan Jameson, Ad-News and Julie Yurek, Winsted-LP Journal were also present.
Vice chairman Hoernemann led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Motion was made by BK, seconded by FB to approve the consent agenda as modified; the minutes from October 21 were corrected and November 4 minutes and bills in the amount of $117,822.42 were approved. Motion carried.
In the Good News Section Ms. Lukens reported on future problem solving. The fine arts program was reviewed. Veteran's Day Program was a success.
Old Business The idea of having non-voting students on the board was discussed. A report will be given in January. The minutes of the meeting for the MSBA awards program will be sent to MSBA.
There was discussion on the agreement with the city for use of the ballfields. The city charged the school $150 because the bleachers weren't removed and the restrooms cleaned within five days of the last home sporting event. Kyllo moved and Remer seconded a motion to ask for an amendment to the agreement to extend the cleanup time to 15 working days after the last event. Motion carried.
Hoernemann moved and Blaser seconded a motion to accept the snow removal bid for Litzau Excavating. Motion carried.
Board reports followed with no action required.
Administrative reports were provided in written form.
Dates have been set for the Spelling Bee January 27 at 4:30 and the Geography Bee January 9 at 4:30.
Kyllo moved and Remer seconded a motion to hold a special meeting to approve the levy on Dec. 19 at 6:30. Motion carried.
Krull moved and Blaser seconded a motion to join the National School Public Relations Association for $195. Motion carried.
The meeting recessed at 6:45 for a joint meeting with the city council and township boards from Bergen and Winsted Townships. Discussion at that meeting surrounded whether we should move forward as a joint use or a shared use facility. The township boards left the meeting early because they apparently didn't want to share in the cost of the facility. The city and school board continued meeting and discussed various options for funding; they sent the school attorney away with several questions to be researched. Further information, non-tax impact and options will be presented at the Dec. 19 meeting.
The school board reconvened at 8:33 and adjourned at 8:34.
