Lester Prairie Public Schools
Independent School District 424
2010-2011 Annual Report on Curriculum, Instruction and Student Achievement
Board Approved: October 17, 2011
Why this annual report? Our District and all Minnesota districts are required to publish an annual summary report related to curriculum, instruction, student achievement, and the Minnesota graduation rules. The legislation that requires this report provides Minnesota school districts and the Department of Education with a framework of system accountability. This report follows the framework for system accountability to be reported to the district’s public. Some of the key points will focus on the testing done in 2010-2011, the results of the testing, what we hope to accomplish with the results, and our plans for the 2011-2012 school year. This report will also outline some of the options available to our students as they progress toward graduation.
This report will be published on our website for the public: October 24, 2011.
Lester Prairie Advisory Committee
The goal of the Lester Prairie Advisory Committee is to provide for community, staff, and student input. It also is a forum for staff and community to participate in site-based, shared decision making, and to act as an advisory committee on staff development and other school areas that require parent input. See Appendix D for an outline of the structure. The committee’s structure was approved by the School Board in January, 2005. The revised structure was approved in April 2007.
*** This committee requires public membership. Any member of the community is invited to become a member. If you are interested in serving on this committee please contact: Mike McNulty, Superintendent at 320-395-2521 ***

2010-2011
Grade 7 = 28; Grade 8 = 31; Grade 9 = 31; Grades K-6=214; Grade 10 = 32; Grade 11 = 33; Grade 12 = 26; Total = 395
Graduation Rate
The Graduation rate for the Class of 2011 was 97.4%
Adequate Yearly Progress
Lester Prairie did not make AYP in 2010-2011, we are in stage 2.1 in math as a district. Two years of making AYP in math and the district will satisfy the requirements to make AYP.
Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA)
Appendix C. has a summary of the MCA tests done in 2010-11, and shows a 3-year comparison of the percentage of students passing the MCA tests in grades 3-11.
Graduation-Required Assessments for Diploma (GRAD)
The Graduation-Required Assessments for Diploma (GRAD) are the state tests that fulfill Minnesota’s high school graduation requirement for students who first entered grade 8 in 2005-06 or later. These tests measure student performance on essential skills in Writing, Reading and Mathematics for success in the 21st century. If a student does not satisfy the graduation requirement for an assessment during the first administration, there will be retest opportunities available. The GRAD is first administered as follows: Writing: Grade 9; Reading: Grade 10; Mathematics: Grade 11. The test used for GRAD is the MCA-II.
Career Planning
This section will deal with the School Districts efforts to assist students as they plan and prepare for their future. The counselor uses the Kuder Interest inventory. In 11th grade, all students take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). In 2011, the 8th grade will use the Explore Test as an interest inventory. Also in 2011, the 10th grade will use the Plan Test for career planning.
Personal Interviews
The school district guidance counselor conducts a personal interview with each student in grade levels 11 and 12. She also provides optional interviews for grade 10.
The interview for students in Grades 10-12 primarily focus on what the student might be interested in pursuing after high school. The school guidance counselor presents various pathways and shows students how they can steer the curriculum toward their own interest areas. Interviews with all students are completed by the end of the first semester. The interview for the 11th grade student reviews credits and classes, options for the senior year, testing options for college, and future plans. The interviews for students in Grade 12 are much more specific, they include a credit check and options for the senior year, however they also include one on one assistance to prepare for life after high school. Specifically, the school guidance counselor assists each student with their post-secondary education needs and wants. Parents of seniors may also request an interview with the school guidance counselor to discuss the options for their student.
Education - Post Secondary Options & College Courses
Lester Prairie High School has expanded its post secondary options to include work with Ridgewater Community College, College Now with Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU), and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (CIS). Our college credit classes include English Composition 151, English Literature 120 (English classes alternate years), College Algebra through SMSU and Calculus through CIS – University of Minnesota.
Lester Prairie School District 424, LCTN (Little Crow Tele-Network), and Ridgewater College have been partners in two main areas: Interactive Television and Tech Prep/School to Work. These cooperative efforts have opened many opportunities for our students to pursue a wide range of interests and activities.
High School Classes
For a complete listing of the classes offered at LPHS please contact the school counselor’s office for a copy of the registration guide.
Benefits to the Stakeholders by the use of Technology in our School System.
The Lester Prairie school system offers an enriched program because of the use of technology. The interactive television cooperative allows the Lester Prairie High School to teach courses to other schools and to receive high school and college classes for our students. We have been able to introduce high-speed data service for use by payroll and school finance at a cost effective price because of the cooperative and because we are able to utilize e-rate. Teachers, students and other staff have internet access. We presently have over 120 computers for student and staff use. This is approximately a ratio of 1 computer per 3.5 students. The District has a technology plan in place and each year it is updated to reflect the needs for the coming year. A copy of the technology plan is available by contacting the High School Office. A large portion of the money received from the Rural Education Achievement Program (REAP) has been used to enhance technology instruction and technology systems. The Lester Prairie School Board also designated an additional $20,000 to be put towards technology during the 2010-2011 school year.
ITV (Interactive Television) and On-Line Classes
During the 2010-11 school year there were over 20 classes offered on the ITV network, to the juniors and seniors. LPHS teachers offered the following classes on the network: Business Law and Marketing. LPHS students were enrolled in the following on-line classes: French, Child Development, College Algebra, Creative Writing, and Teen & Family. Classes are also available for adult continuing education.
Articulated Courses
Articulated courses can be taken by students at Lester Prairie and they may receive credit as a high school class and a college class. Each year new courses are added to the list of classes that are available to students. In 2010-11 students were able to receive dual credit in CADD (computer aided drafting and design), Woods I & II, and Accounting. Students should check with the school counselor to explore the various opportunities in this area.
PSEO option
Juniors and Seniors in high school who qualify for post secondary option classes may choose to attend the college of their choice while still in high school. For information on this option please contact the school guidance counselor.
TITLE I/Basic Skills Programs
During 2010-2011, our Title 1 count of students serviced in grades 1-6 was 47. Students qualified in grades 1 & 2 by utilizing AIMSweb, the DIBELS assessment of language, and teacher recommendations. In grades 3-6, Lester Prairie used the scores of the Northwest Evaluation Association assessment, taken three times in 2010-11, the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment, and teacher recommendations to determine qualification for service. Two full-time lead teachers provided small group help in reading and math, coordinated by the elementary principal. Extra support was given during the noon hour, offering everyone a chance to be serviced.
Community Input
During the 2010-11 school year the Lester Prairie School Board continued a policy of including a public input component into their regularly scheduled monthly meeting. The Board also established a local Facilities Improvement Committee to explore opportunities for improving or adding to our present facilities. We are proposing a bond referendum on November 8, 2011.
Student Evaluation of Education at LPHS
The School Board and administration chose LifeTrack Services to do exit interviews of all 2011 graduates. The survey contained 18 questions concerning many areas. The District has conducted this survey with each graduating class since 1999.
