MINUTES
Regular Meeting of the Board of Education
Independent School District 879, Delano Public Schools
The regular meeting of the Board of Education of Independent School District 879, Delano, Minnesota, was held on Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at Delano City Hall. The meeting was called to order by the chair at 5:45 p.m. with the following members in attendance: Johnson, Seguin, Depa, Milano and Briesemeister. Black arrived at 6:13 p.m. Absent: Larson.
APPROVAL OF MEETING AGENDA (approved unanimously)
The agenda was approved after one item, the MAWSECO report, was removed, and two items, a SEE report and a staff development report, were added.
WORK SESSION
Board reviewed discussion items: an MOU with Hennepin County regarding transportation of foster care students, an update from the POC Committee, September authorization of levy authority, PEIP MOAs, a permanent interfund transfer and facility usage procedures.
PROGRAM REVIEW
Wright Technical Center – Brian Koslofsky; Welcome of Chinese guests; Youth development programs – Chris Runke; Tiger Kids Club programs – Becca Seiberlich.
CONSENT AGENDA (approved unanimously)
Board approved the regular meeting minutes of 8/28/17. It also approved the current budget status with year-to-date adjustments, investment transactions, construction bond investment transactions, wire transfers, Minnesota Liquid Assets fund, cash report, revenue and expense fund totals, expense reports and disbursements.
RESOLUTION OF ACCEPTANCE OF GIFTS (approved unanimously)
PERSONNEL (approved unanimously)
Board approved retirements/resignations/terminations, recommendations of employment and contract changes, including: Retirements/Resignations/Terminations: Tiger Activity Center employee, DES recess paraprofessional. Recommendations of Employment: CE field trip supervisor, assistant cross country coach, TAC student monitor, paraprofessional, TAC supervisor, TKC student aide (3). Contract Changes/Approvals/Position Changes: Custodian. Lane changes: Obtaining master’s degree – DES Kindergarten teacher, DMS social studies teacher, DES physical education teacher, DES grade 2 teacher; DES grade 1 teacher (2), DMS grade 6 teacher. Leaves of Absence: DES special ed. teacher, DHS mathematics teacher.
ADMINISTRATIVE AND BOARD REPORTS
Board heard the following administrative reports: Superintendent Schoen reported on Kindness in Chalk, the chamber visit and construction progress. B. Voight reported on the start of the school year, rising academic proficiency, preparation for the intermediate school transition, and thanked the PIE group for the cookie dough fundraiser. S. Heil reported on construction, a successful homecoming, traffic movement around campus, ACT scores and college preparedness, and preparations to transition to a secondary school next year. D. Schuler reported on the start of the year and successful orientation days, background checks and volunteers, the Active Schools National Award, Walk to School Day and a PIE donation for playground equipment. M. Reeder reported that the audit had begun and that preliminary results will come to the board in October. D. Johnson reported on Delano United events, a community reading event, early childhood classes, screening, Wee Tiger Preschool enrollment, swimming lessons and the TAC desk location.
Board heard reports from: Wright Technical Center, SEE, staff development.
OLD BUSINESS (approved unanimously)
Approved the second read of Policy 533 Wellness.
NEW BUSINESS (approved unanimously)
Approved the Delano-Hennepin County MOU regarding transportation, a permanent interfund transfer, the 2017 pay 2018 proposed property tax levy, a date of Monday, Dec. 18 for the Truth-in-Taxation meeting, and a repeal of Policy 411 VEBA.
The meeting was closed to discuss labor negotiations strategy.
