Montrose Fire Department upgrades
Responding to house fires, grass fires, medical calls, and now, the delivery of a baby are all things the Montrose Fire Department has under its belt. But as the City of Montrose grows, the fire department prepares to take care of the increasing population. Longtime Fire Chief Mike Marketon is trying to anticipate the department’s needs so it can stand at the ready whenever needed. “We are always looking for some good fire fighters, and trying to plan and stay ahead of (the growth) so we don’t fall behind,” Marketon said. Which is why Marketon budgeted for a new rescue truck which arrived in the spring of 2006. “People laughed when we first said we needed a new fire truck,” Marketon said. “But it fits in pretty good right now.” The fire department has also upgraded its equipment through a grant for new self-contained breathing apparatuses. With 27 volunteers, the department is within its desired range of 25 to 30 members. They will all be kept busy, as the fire department responded to 162 calls last year. Many of the calls are medical, but one special call to Franklin Township led the fire department to aid in the delivery of a baby the first delivery for the department. Members of the department not only stay on top of things with their new equipment, but through monthly meetings and training sessions. For more information on the Montrose Fire Department, or to become a volunteer, contact Mike Marketon (763) 675-3371.
