Waverly Fire Department adapts to change

By Liz Hellmann

The Waverly Fire Department is gearing up for some changes as it looks to buy the building that currently houses the fire department and the city hall.

The fire department has been separate from the City of Waverly since the mid-1970s. As a separate entity, it controls its own financing and equipment.

Major changes for are in the fire department’s future. As the city prepares to build a new facility in town, the fire department will be buying the existing city hall and fire department building.

Creating a balance between working with the city and remaining independent can be tricky at times.

“It’s kind of a toss up. There are some advantages to being independent, some advantages to being part of the city. As far as us controlling our finances, that is an advantage for us,” Fire Chief Mark Karels said.

The department will likely be buying the city hall building within the next two years, according to Karels.

From there, not too much will change.

Possibilities for upgrading the building include converting part of it into a workout room for the firefighters and rearrange some office space.

Other than building needs, the department is set with all of its equipment needs.

As more houses are built, the department is called on more often, about 100 times last year.

Karels, who has been with the department for 21 years is hoping to add to the 19 member force. The ideal number of volunteer firefighters would be 28 for the department.

For more information on the Waverly Fire Department, or to become a volunteer, contact Mark Karels (763) 658-4662.
