Good fishing, great fun

By Liz Hellmann

Looking for a place to take the boat out and relax, without wasting a tank of gas? Little Waverly Lake and Big Waverly Lake offer great fishing and a chance to get away, without going away.

“You don’t see anything busy around the lake, it’s almost like you were 200 miles north on a lake,” Bush said.

Big Waverly Lake is located entirely within the city limits of Waverly, while Little Waverly Lake is not. However, there are plenty of fish to choose from in both lakes, which are connected by a boat channel.

“Pretty much anything that’s in one lake, you’re going to find in the other lake,” Jim Woitalla, Waverly Parks Superintendent said.

That includes northern pike, the most popular fish in Little Waverly, along with catfish, walleye, yellow perch, bluegills, black crappie, largemouth bass, and carp.

To gain access to all of these wonderful fish, Wright County maintains a public access and picnic area on the east side of Little Waverly Lake.

There are two boat landings on Big Waverly Lake on the southeast shore. Both are owned by the City of Waverly. One is located on 5th Street North and Park Drive, and the other access in Waverly’s Legion Memorial Park.

The lakes are kept up by the city, which sprays for lake weeds twice a year.

There is also a beach in Waverly’s Legion Memorial Park for those who would rather catch some sun than some fish. A fishing pier is available for those who wish to try their luck from shore.
