Rehmann graduates basic
Army National Guard Pvt. Justin J. Rehmann, son of Mark Rehmann of Howard Lake, recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. He is a 2007 graduate of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School.
During the nine weeks of training, Rehmann studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, and physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
Local students graduate college
Kassandra Nystrom, daughter of Gary and Eileen Nystrom of Winsted, graduated cum laude from Winter College in New York City, NY with a master’s degree in urban planning. Kassandra is married to Hans Erickson, son of Karen and Peter Erickson of Minneapolis.
Amada Bartos, daughter of Les and Sharon Bartos of Montrose, graduated recently from the Day College program at Augsburg College in Rochester, earning a degree in music education.
Kirsten Olson Paccha, daughter of Mark and Debra Olson, graduated magna cum laude May 16 from Northwestern College in St. Paul, earning a bachelor of arts degree in ESL education. Kirsten is a 2004 homeschool graduate.
Chritin LaMott of Winsted, and Cindi Koopmeiners of Howard Lake graduated June 7 with master of arts degrees in education from Saint Mary’s University, Twin Cities.
Local students on dean’s lists
Alyssa Kovar, daughter of Dale and Linda Kovar of Mayer, was recently named to the 2009 winter and May semester dean’s list at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA, where she is a sophomore. Students are named to the list for earning a 3.5 grade point average in at least five course credits during the winter and May terms.
Molly Rasset was recently named to the 2009 spring semester president’s list at Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical, for completing a minimum of 12 credits during the term and achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or above.
Several local students were recently named to the 2009 spring semester dean’s list at Minnesota State University in Mankato. Students earning a 4.0 grade point average were named to the high honor list, and those earning a 3.5 to 3.99 average were named to the honor list. Justine Ernst, daughter of Jason and Lois Ernst of Lester Prairie, was recently named to the 2009 spring semester dean’s honor list at Concordia College in Moorhead, for carrying a minimum of 12 semester credits and earning a grade point average of at least 3.7. Justine graduated in May, as well.
Jennifer Van Beusekom of Montrose was recently named to the 2009 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Wisconsin in Stout, WI, where she is majoring in hotel, restaurant, and tourism management, for earning a grade point average of 3.5 or above.
Local students receive scholarships
Emma Neumann of Winsted recently accepted a scholarship from Bemidji State University for the 2009-10 academic year. A freshman majoring in criminal justice, she will receive a $1,000 Kopp Family Foundation Scholarship.
Curtis Herbolsheimer of Winsted recently accepted a $1,000 Academic Achievement Scholarship from Bemidji State University for the 2009-10 academic year, where he will be a freshman majoring in engineering. These scholarships are awarded to students who graduate high school in the top 30 percent of their class with an ACT score of at least 24.
Sarah Painter is EFCA worker
Sarah Painter, daughter of Merle and Karen Painter of Winsted, has been working for Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) Crisis Response/Touch Global since October 2008 in Galveston, TX, where she heads up volunteer efforts for victims of Hurricane Ike, which hit Galveston in September 2008. Sarah is a 2003 Watertown-Mayer High School graduate, and a 2007 Bethel University graduate.

Les and Kathy Pettit of Howard Lake are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Christy Pettit, to Del Whitman, son of Del Sr. and Mary Whitman of Olivia.
Birth: Hailey Jo Birkholz
Adam and Dana Birkholz of Lester Prairie are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Hailey Jo Birkholz, Friday, June 26, 2009, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Hailey weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces, and measured 18.5 inches long.
Proud grandparents are Jim and Carol Mickolichek of Winsted, Robert and Nancy Birkholz of Lester Prairie, and Dean Ford of Hackensack.
Birth: Calvin Ciro Schmieg
Jacalyn Schmieg of Winsted is pleased to announce the birth of her son, Calvin Ciro Schmieg, Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Glencoe Regional Services. Calvin weighed 8 pounds 6 ounces, and measured 20 inches long. He is welcomed home by siblings, Hailey, Dominic, and Carter Savage.
Proud grandparents are Delbert Schmieg and Heidi Schmieg, both of Winsted.
Birth: Savannah Jessie-Elaine Svoboda
Shawn and Megan Svoboda of Howard Lake are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Savannah Jessie-Elaine Svoboda, Monday, June 22, 2009, at the Buffalo Hospital.
Savannah weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces, and measured 21 inches long.
