Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997 for Herbert A. (Tony) Ernst, age 77 of Mayer, formerly Watertown. He died Saturday, Dec. 20 at Westwood Place in Watertown. He was born Dec. 3, 1920 at Lester Prairie, Minn., the son of Fred and Emelia (Wolf) Ernst.
On Jan. 1, 1921 he was baptized at the Evangelical United Church in Lester Prairie by the Reverend Witzke and confirmed there on March 23, 1934 by the Reverend E. J. Becker.
He married Edna Fillbrandt on May 26, 1946 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Young America in a service officiated by the Reverend Kramer.
Tony served in the Army in WWII, serving in the States and Panama. Tony spent most of his life working with his father at the Mayer Meat Market. After selling the store, he worked at Pako in Minneapolis. While in Mayer, he served as treasurer for Zion Lutheran Church, treasurer of the Mayer Fire Department and clerk for the Mayer Public School.
Tony was an honorary member of the Mayer Fire Department and belonged to the Waconia VFW. Both stood guard at the funeral home and held graveside services for him in Mayer.
Tony is survived by his former wife and friend, Edna Ernst of Mayer; daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and Duane Mielke of New Germany, son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Kathy Ernst of Waconia; grandchildren: Thomas Mielke of New Germany, Janet Mielke of New Germany, Steven and Jennifer Mielke of Waconia, Danny Mielke of New Germany, Kevin Mielke of New Germany, Michael Ernst of Waconia, Heather Ernst of Waconia, and great-grandson Logan.
He is further survived by a sister Malinda Fillbrandt of Norwood Young America; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Ole Ernst of Lester Prairie, Violet Jensen of Hopkins, Glenna Klebe of Buffalo, Joanne Fillbrandt of Norwood Young America, Waldo and Doris Fillbrandt of Mora, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Fred and Emelia Ernst; brothers, Everett, Robert, and Martin Ernst and a sister Lou Schmidt.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Watertown, Minn. with the Reverend Jeff Harter officiating.
Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Mayer. Casketbearers were his grandchildren: Thomas Mielke, Janet Mielke, Steven Mielke, Danny Mielke, Kevin Mielke, Michael Ernst and Heather Ernst.
