Herbert F. Goerke age 78 years of Maple Lake died early Monday, October 20, 1997 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
He was born in Chatham Township on May 24, 1919, the son of Adolph A. and Ida Uecker Goerke.
Herbert was baptized on June 29, 1919 by the Rev. Streufert at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Middleville Township, Wright County. He was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith on April 9, 1933 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church by the Rev. William Kanning. Herbert was given John 13:35 as his confirmation memory verse. He remained faithful to the promises he made at his confirmation all his life and died a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Herbert honorably served his country during W.W. II in the Army of the United States. His military service including serving in Northern France, Normandy, and in the Rhineland. Herbert was awarded the Purple Heart.
On July 19, 1942, Herbert was joined in holy marriage to Lydia Koepke at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis, S.D. God blessed their marriage with four children: DeLoris, DuWayne, Phyllis, and Gale.
Herbert was a long time employee of Minnesota Rubber and was also a former supervisor. He belonged to the I.A.M. Machinists Union, American Legion Post # 131, and V.F.W. Post # 7664. In addition, Herbert was a voting member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife Lydia A. Goerke; children: DeLoris (Larry) Smith, DuWayne (Barb) Goerke, Phyllis (Bill) Paumen all of Maple Lake, and Gale (Steve) Bernhardt of Maple Grove; grandchildren: Keith Goerke, Jody Paumen, Bill Paumen Jr., Troy Bernhardt, Shelly Henson, Becky Yager, Mary Scheiber, Jennifer Goerke, Miranda Goerke, Kim Jerome, and Missy Bernhardt; seven great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers: Ida Beckmann of Warsaw, Minn., Ella Kanning of Churdan, Iowa, Esther Marohn of Howard Lake, Arthur (Gladeline) Goerke of Maple Lake, Walter (Sadie) Goerke of Buffalo, and Erna Elfmann of Maple Lake; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Edwin Koepke, Irma (Marvin) Uecker, and Frieda Gunderson all of Annandale
Herbert is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph A. and Ida Goerke; by a brother, Theodore M. Goerke in 1981; by a sister, Lydia Beckmann, in 1990; and by a brother, Adolph W. Goerke in 1991.
Funeral services for Herbert were Friday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Middleville Township. The Rev. Gary Berlinski officiated and interment with military rites followed at the Church Cemetery.
Friends called at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo Thursday, Oct. 23 from 4 until 9 p.m. A prayer service was at the chapel Thursday at 8 p.m.
The casket bearers were: Keith Goerke, Jody Paumen, Bill Paumen, Jr. Troy Bernhardt, Mike Elfmann, and Todd Goerke. The honorary casket bearers were grandchildren: Shelly, Becky, Mary, Jennifer, Miranda, Kim, and Missy.
The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
