Robert Rueben Johnson

Robert Rueben Johnson was born March 28, 1927 at Mankato, Minn. to Claus and Anna (Kidman) Johnson. The family moved around as Bob was growing up and spent time in Mankato, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Bob was baptized at St. Peter and Paul Church in Mankato and confirmed at Latrobe Pennsylvania.

Bob graduated from high school in Pittsburg, and joined the United States Navy. He always had an interest in ships, plans and the ocean.

After Naval service, Bob returned to the Mankato area. There he met Ivy Gloff on the rollerskating floor. The couple were wed May 9, 1953 at St. James Catholic Church, St. Paul. Their 44 years were blessed by the birth of five children.

The couple made their home in St. Paul at first, then Bloomington and in 1973 moved to Howard Lake. Bob worked for Westinghouse for awhile, then as a press operator for Webb Publishing where he stayed for 34 years, retiring in 1989.

Bob was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a past secretary of Victory Township. He had many friends and touched many hearts. His daughter Dawn named her son after him because "He was a good honest man with good morals."

Bob passed away at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia, after a courageous seven year battle with cancer, on Nov. 2, 1997. He reached the age of 70 years, seven months and five days.

Survivors include: wife Ivy of Howard Lake, son John and wife Meggan and their children: Kelly, Dustin, Stewart and Drew of Bloomington; son Ed and wife, Dawn and children, TJ and Nicole of Howard Lake; daughter Dawn and husband, Roy Freid and their children Robert and Colette of Minneapolis; daughter Tina and husband Scott Wagner and their daughter, Dana Sterner of Golden Valley.

He is also survived by his brother John of Seltsburg, Penn.; sisters, Lucille Ayers of Fairbault, Genevieve Gorman of Ocala, Penn., Joyce Swicegood of Anna Maria, Penn., Juanita Nourie of Nicollet and Ramona James of Mankato.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Claus and Anna Johnson, brother Vincent and son, baby boy Johnson.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997 at St. Mary's Church, Waconia, Minn and officiated by the Rev. William Martin. Music was provided by Patricia Munson and St. Mary's Choir.

Interment was in the Howard Lake Cemtery. Casketbearers were Jim Ayers, Drew Johnson, Stewart Johnson, Tom Streett, Doug James, Dustin Johnson, and Clarence Marketon.
