Evelyn Arolla Valeria Burau
Evelyn Burau, age 77 of Howard Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Care Center.
Evelyn Arolla Valeria was born the daughter of Louis and Anna (Bongard) Brelje on March 17, 1921 in Benton Township, Carver County, Minn. She was baptized March 27, 1921 at Zion Lutheran Church, Benton Township, Cologne by the Rev. Herman Amend and confirmed in her faith at that same church.
On Dec. 23, 1941, she was united in marriage to Roy Burau at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia. This union was blessed with the birth of 12 children, five sons and seven daughters.
They made their home in various places, living two years in Delano, three years in Waconia, five years in Hutchinson, and moving back to Delano for four more years. In October, 1955, they settled in Howard Lake.
Evelyn worked at Tonka Toys for 17 years and enjoyed gardening and canning. On Dec. 5, 1998, while a resident of the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Care Center, Evelyn was called to her eternal rest at the age of 77 years, eight months, and 18 days.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Burau; one brother, Henry Brelje; three sisters: Lorina Segler, Ruth Adams, and Dorothy Kruzel; four sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; and one granddaughter, Tabitha Joy Roepke.
Evelyn is survived by her children: Gerald Burau and wife, Carol, of Howard Lake; Ruth Oestreich and husband, Harvey, of Howard Lake; DeLloyd Burau and wife, Diane, of Buffalo; Roger and wife, Janet, of Minneapolis; Janice Quast and husband, Felix, of Winsted; Coleen Cronen and husband, Jerald, of Hutchinson; Vivian Kohnen and husband, Gary, of Rockford; Dale Burau and wife, Julie, of Howard Lake; Una Kapellusch and husband, Lenny, of Howard Lake; Mavis Roepke and husband, Allan, of Dassel; Dean Burau and wife, Karen, of Svea and Mary Kay Bergquist and husband, Douglas, of Cokato.
She is further survived by a sister, Luella Domras of Bloomington; two brothers-in-law, Herbert Burau of Green Isle and Carl Burau and wife, Lois, of Tex.; two sisters-in-law, Winnie Burau of Plymouth and Lydia Schmidt and husband, Melvin, of New Germany; 28 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake. Funeral services were on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. from St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Music was by Nancy Butterfass, with special music by Philip Oestreich and Sherry Murphy. Interment was at the Howard Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were her 28 grandchildren.
