Henry August Engelke
Funeral services for Henry August Engelke, 93, of Glencoe were held Sunday, Aug. 23, from the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, with the Rev. Donald Andrea officiating.
Mr. Engelke died on Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at the Glencoe Area Health center's long-term care facility.
Organist was Betsy Werner. The Emanuel Men's Choir sang "Muede Bin Ich, Geh Zuruh" and "Take My Hand And Lead Me." The congregational hymn was "How Great Thou Art." Pam Strauss sang as a solo "Asleep In Jesus."
Pallbearers were Jeff Boesche, Jon Boesche, Michael Peterson, Daniel Trongard, Jason Engelke and Ralph Voigt. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Engelke was born to Frederick and Wilhemina (Lustman) Engelke on July 18, 1905 in Helen Township of McLeod County. He was baptized July 30, 1905 at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg by the Rev. Pfotenhauer. He was later confirmed at Emanuel on April 13, 1919 by the Rev. Bowfin. He attended the Emanuel Lutheran Parochial School.
On Nov. 25, 1926, Mr. Engelke was united in marriage with Emma Stockman at the St. Paul's United Church Of Christ in Plato. The couple made their home on a neighboring farmstead approximately the first two years after marriage and then moved to their own farm near Plato.
His wife, Emma died on Jan. 27, 1974. In 1991, he moved to Glencoe and since February of 1996 has been a resident of the Glencoe Area Health Center's long-term care unit.
He had been very active at Emanuel serving various time on the church council, a member of the Men's Club, and being a charter member of the Emanuel Lutheran Male Choir. Mr. Engelke also had served on the Helen Township School Board.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and had a love for music.
Survivors include his children, Doris Huss of Phoenix, Ariz, Gerald Engelke and wife, Marci, of Bloomington, Eileen Anderson and husband, Norm, of Glencoe, Lanny Engelke and wife, Jenny, of Plato; grandchildren, Pamela Strauss and husband, Joseph, of Brooklyn Park, Daniel Trongard of Rapid City, S.D., Brenda Janke and husband, Mark, of Luck, Wis., Jason Engelke and wife, Michelle, of Bloomington, Jeff Boesche and wife, Donna, of Glencoe, Jon Boesche and wife, Julie, of Plato, the Rev. Joel Boesche and wife, Stephanie, of Sacramento, Calif., Kimberly Martinez and husband, Tom, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Kristin Peterson and husband, Michael, of Victoria; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lydia Dammann of Glencoe, Esther Harms of Glencoe, Emma Voigt of Glencoe; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Emma; son, Gordon Engelke; and brother, Adolph Engelke.
