Funeral services for Donald Zellers Hall, age 57, of Lester Prairie were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, 1998 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted.
Officiating was the Reverend Robert Wyffels. The organist was Carrie Knott.
Visitation was held Tuesday evening at the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.
Donald Zellers Hall was born the son of Robert and Mary (Zellers) Hall on May 27, 1940 in Charleston, W. Va. He grew up in Delphos, Ohio and graduated from St. Johns High School in Delphos in 1958.
Donald enlisted in the Army Reserves and attended Northern Ohio University where he graduated in 1962 with a degree in history education. He then taught in Lima Central Catholic High School, but soon after joined the Army in the fall of 1963 and attended the Officer Candidate School.
Donald was commissioned in 1964 and was on three tours of duty in Vietnam, serving as pilot leader, Brigade S-5, an advisor to the Regional Forces and Popular Forces in Quang Tri Provence. Donald served with the Armed Forces Entrance and Examination Station in Houston as a Basic Training Company Commander at Ft. Campbell, Ky.
Donald completed the Infantry Officers Advanced Course at Ft. Benning, Ga. and became an ROTC instructor at the University of Dayton while serving as Adjutant and Advisor to the Pershing Rifles. At the same time he worked on his masters degree in education supervision from 1972-1974. Donald was then assigned to Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas 1974-75. He left active duty in the Army to pursue principal education at Mankato State University in Minnesota.
He served as principal and football coach at Verdi from 1976-1978; principal at Ellendale/Geneva High School from 1978-1983; then attended Brown Institute of Technology in 1985.
Donald became the principal of Lester Prairie High School in 1985 and retired in 1996. He was a member of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Lester Prairie Lions Club where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow Award winner, various United States Army Officers Clubs and the Minnesota National Guard.
His military awards included two bronze Stars, the Air Medal, and a Purple Heart.
He enjoyed spending time with his two sons, Dave and Bob. Donald loved Elvis and sports. He was a great supporter of the schools and communities, involved in the extra curricular activities and fund raisers, always putting others before himself.
On Wednesday, April 1, 1998, Donald Zellers Hall entered eternal rest at the Glencoe Area Health Center at the age of 57 years, 10 months, and 4 days.
He is preceded in death by his father, Robert I. Hall and step father, Clifford Beckett.
Donald is survived by his sons: David Hall and fiancee Roxanne Roeller of Lakeville, Minn. and Robert Hall of Aberdeen, SD; grandson, Tyler David Hall; mother, Mary Hall Beckett of Ohio; sisters, Louanne Smith and husband Dan of Georgia; brothers: Tom Hall and wife Marylin of Indiana and Philip Hall of Florida; former wife, Kim Hall of Brooklyn Center, as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
