Irene Leone Janckila died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998 at Cokato Manor, having reached the age of 85 years and 11 months. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 7 in Cokato.
Irene was born March 3, 1912 on her parents farm in Victor Township, Wright County, Minn. to Henry and Josephine (Yorken) Hempel. She was baptized and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake.
The family moved to Cokato Township in 1925 and Irene graduated from Cokato High School in 1930.
On July 15, 1934 she married John E. Janckila. Four sons were born to the couple, who farmed in Cokato Township until 1980.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, John, Feb. 2, 1983; her parents; a son Kenneth; and brothers, Lester and Vernon.
She is survived by her sons, Donald and wife Arlene, Coon Rapids; Gary and wife Vicky, Cokato;, Darrel and wife Em, Golden Valley; 25 grandchildren; and 61 great-grandchildren.
She is further survived by a brother, Willard Hempel, Cokato; sister-in-law Marion Hempel; and daughter-in-law Hinni Janckila, Cokato.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. at Laestadian Congregation Church of Cokato with Pastor George Koivukangas officiating. Music was by Heidi Raisanen.
Casketbearers were Edwin Simonson, Donald Wuollet, Gerald Kumpula, Roy Skoog, Loren Hoikka, and Jerald Mattila. Interment was in the Cokato Finnish Cemetary.
