Rev. Alfred Christian Schmalz, 93, of Jefferson City, Mo., formerly of Lester Prairie, Minn., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998 at Capitol Region Medical Center - Southwest Campus.
He was born July 26, 1904 in Lester Prairie, the son of William and Emma Therese (Meyer) Schmalz. He graduated from Concordia Academy in St. Paul, Minn.; Concordia College in St. Paul, and then from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo. in 1931.
He was married April 11, 1940 in Chaska, Minn., to Gertrude "Trudy" Ehlen, who followed him in death on Feb. 20, 1998.
He was the pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson City from 1931 - 1956 and at St. John Lutheran Church, Luverne, Minn. from 1956 - 1981.
He was an active leader and supporter of the church and community. In his retirement, he served as needed in area churches of Jefferson City from 1981.
He is survived by three sons: Rev. Daniel M. Schmalz and wife Connie of Morristown, N.J., Paul W. Schmalz of Overland Park, Ks., and Rev. Joel T. Schmalz and wife Trudy of Duluth, Minn.; one brother: Rueben Schmalz of Lester Prairie, and four grandchildren: Sara Schmalz; Stephanie Schmalz; David Schmalz and Mark Schmalz.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, Feb. 16, 1998 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Reverends, Daniel M. Schmalz, Jerome Brownlee and John Hobratschk officiating. Private family interment was held in Riverview Cemetery.
