Sister Alethea Stifter obituary 7/6/98


Sister Alethea Stifter, 88, a Franciscan sister of the
Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minn., who served in the
nursing profession, died on July 6, 1998 at Assisi Heights, Rochester.
Born Agnes Stifter on May 5, 1910 in Howard Lake, Minn.,
Sister Alethea entered the Franciscan congregation in 1936 from Holy Trinity
Parish, Winsted, Minn. She made her profession of vows in 1938 and began
her nursing career at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester.
After finishing her studies at the College of St. Teresa,
Winona, she returned to St. Mary’s Hospital and ministered to the sick from
1943-1969.
She will be remembered for her work with the Sister Joseph
Endowment fund-raising activities, more fondly referred to as “Sister
Barnabas’ donut sales”. She also organized the St. Mary’s alumni benefit
sales.
From 1972-1981, Sister Alethea was assigned to Mercy Hospital,
Portsmouth, Ohio, where she assumed duties as an infection control officer.
She also received recognition in Portsmouth for assisting the Salvation
Army in their annual Toys for Tots drive to obtain Christmas toys for children.
From 1981-1991, she did outstanding volunteer work and
was honored for her many years of dedicated service to the Retired Senior
Volunteer Program (RSVP).
Sister Alethea retired to Assisi Heights in 1992 and celebrated
her diamond jubilee in May, 1998.
In addition to her Franciscan community, Sister Alethea
is survived by two brothers: Clarence Stifter of Morris Plains, N.J., and
Norbert Stifter of Howard Lake, Minn.; and three sisters: Louise Loebertmann
of Howard Lake, Rosina Suilmann of Wabasha, and Sister Mary Louis Stifter,
C.S.C., of Notre Dame, Ind.
Friends called at a wake service in Assisi Heights on
Wednesday, July 8 at 6:30 p.m., and also before the funeral service on Thursday.
A Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes,
Assisi Heights, with the Rev. Jack Krough officiating.
Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.
