Howard E. Bunge
Howard E. Bunge, age 75 of Mayer, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at St. Mary's Care Center, Winsted.
Howard was born July 8, 1925, at Lowden, Iowa, the son of Otto and Dorothea (Licht) Bunge. He was baptized July 26, 1925 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lowden, Iowa, by the Rev. J. H. Brammer; and confirmed there April 6, 1939, by the Rev. Herman H. Maas.
On July 21, 1963, Hoard married Helen M. Riese at St. John's Lutheran Church, State Center, Iowa, by the Revs. Donald Lutz and Eickelberg.
Howard was drafted in 1950 for his services in the U.S. Army. He served two years in the Korean Conflict, and was awarded the combat infantry man's badge, the three service stars combat ribbon, and the purple heart for an injury he received in action July 22, 1951.
Howard graduated from Concordia College, River Forest, Ill., in 1964. He received a call to teach grades 5-8 and be principal at Trinity Lutheran School, North Morristown, Minn.
In 1983, he received a call to teach grades 7-8 at Zion Lutheran School, Mayer.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Dorothea Bunge; and a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Gerry Bunge.
He is survived by his wife Helen; a son, Peter Bunge of South Minneapolis; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Miriam Bunge of Monroe, Mich., and Robert and Elaine Bunge of Lowden, Iowa; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Robert Haensel of Surrey, N.D.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Art and Ellen Riese of Colo, Iowa, and the Rev. Donald and Evelyn Lutz of Williamsburg, Iowa; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Sunday, Oct. 1, 2 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Mayer, with the Revs. Peter A. Meier and Jeff Harter officiating. Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Mayer.
Jonathan Bunge, David Bunge, Mark Bunge, James Bunge, Robert Haensel, Jeff Bunge, and Nathan Lutz served as casket bearers.
Arrangements were by Johnson Funeral Home, Waconia.
