Mae Engel, age 91 of Howard Lake, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Care Center.
Mae was born April 12, 1908, in Paintsville, Ky., the daughter of Calvin and Tela (Van Hoose) Combs. At the age of three, the family moved to the Howard Lake area.
As a young woman, Mae worked as a waitress and pastry cook in the area, and after her marriage to Reuben Engel, she worked at Lil's Cafe and Tonka Toys.
Mae was a lifetime member of the Howard Lake Christian Church. She was active in the Garden Club, Senior Citizen Group, Wright County Historical Society, and the auxiliary at the Good Samaritan Center.
Survivors include children: Betty (David) Mitchell of Duluth, Carol (Dale) Anderson of Cokato, and Brad Engel of Howard Lake; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Reuben, who died in 1973; her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Carl Wanha; her parents; and brothers, Walter, Everett, and Natt Combs.
Services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 26, 11 a.m., at the Howard Lake Christian Church with the Rev. Pat Ridpath officiating. Music was provided by Dennis Entinger and Jewell Malerich.
Casket bearers were Dale Anderson, Jess Anderson, Scott Anderson, Chad Engel, Mattias Hallendorff, Elliott Knetsch, and David Mitchell. Interment was in the Howard Lake City Cemetery.
The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home, Inc., Cokato and Howard Lake, handled the arrangements.
