Charles Herman Gertgen
Charles Herman Gertgen, age 95 of New Hope, and formerly of Howard Lake, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at North Ridge Care Center, New Hope.
Charles was born Feb. 28, 1905, in Long Lake,Minn., to Henry and Anna (Altoff) Gertgen, the second of six children. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church of Atwater, Minn.
Charles grew up in Atwater, and attended school there. He worked on farms in Atwater as a young man.
In 1937, Charles was united in marriage to Ruby Hanson in Willmar, and they moved to Howard Lake. Charles was employed by Gilmer Monument Works in 1942, and worked there for many years. He also worked at Tonka Toys for seven years.
In 1962, Charles moved to Maple Plain.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Charles is survived by children, LeRoy (Marie) of Crystal, Bruce (Carole) of Brooklyn Park, and Larry (Lynn) of Hopkins; a brother, Donald (Viola) of Atwater; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby; and a grandson, Kevin.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Aug. 21, 10 a.m., at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home, Howard Lake, with the Rev. Joel Swedberg officiating. Interment was at Howard Lake City Cemetery.
Visitation was Sunday, Aug. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Halvor Jerde, Steven Gertgen, Richard Gertgen, Mark Gertgen, Dennis Gertgen, and Kevin Gertgen served as casket bearers.
