Walter (Wally) Edgar Leonard Goerke
Walter (Wally) Edgar Leonard Goerke, age 83 of rural Buffalo, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at his residence.
Walter was born in Chatham Township Dec. 21, 1916, the son of Adolph and Ida (Uecker) Goerke.
He was baptized by the Rev. Alfred Streufert at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Middleville Township Jan. 23, 1917. He was also instructed in the Lutheran catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith by Streufert at the same church April 13, 1930. Walter remained faithful to the promises he made at his confirmation all his life, and died a faithful member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Wally was employed by Minnesota Rubber for 28 years and also, formerly, engaged in farming in Marysville Township.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie Goerke; children: Danny Goerke of Buffalo, Arlene (Greg) Gasper of St. Michael, Barbara (Darrell) Hirman of Rockford, Bonnie (Gene) Uecker, and Cindy (Kevin) Kirkham, all of Buffalo; grandchildren, Chad, Christopher, and Joshua Hirman; Jerod and James Gasper, Sheila, Michelle, Shane and Shaun Uecker, Nichole and Justine Kirkham, Kim (Tom) Beriwick and Kristen (Dave) Schumacher; great-grandchildren, Madyson Gasper, Mark Schumacher, Danny Bonk, Jill Bocson and Eric Carlson; and a great-great-grandchild, Michael Bocson.
He is further survived by sisters, Ida Beckman of Morristown, Esther Marohn of Howard Lake, and Erna Elfmann of Maple Lake; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elsie (Tony) Dalbec of St. Paul, and Ruth (Arnie) Goerke of Maple Lake; nieces; nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Wally was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Monson Goerke; a daughter-in-law, Sheri Goerke; his parents; his brothers and sisters, Theodore Goerke, Lydia Beckmann, Adolph Goerke, Herbert Goerke, Arthur Goerke and Ella Kanning; and by a nephew, Ervin Goerke.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 1, 2 p.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Middleville Township. The Rev. Leland D. Bendix officiated and interment followed at Swedesburg Lutheran Cemetery, rural Waverly.
Friends called at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo Friday, March 31, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Ruth Goerke was the organist for the funeral service. "I'm But a Stranger Here," "Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus," "Beautiful Savior," and "The Little Brown Church in the Vale" were sung as congregational hymns.
Sheila Uecker, Michelle Uecker, Nichole Kirkham and Justine Kirkham served as honorary casket bearers.
Chad Hirman, Joshua Hirman, Christopher Hirman, Jerod Gasper, James Gasper, Shane Uecker and Shaun Uecker served as the casket bearers.
The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
