Vincent Thomas Greelis
Vincent Thomas Greelis, age 86 of Thief River Falls and formerly of Howard Lake, passed away March 31, 1999, at Maryvale Samaritan Hospital of Sun City, Ariz.
Vincent was born March 13, 1913, at Waterloo, Iowa, to John and Alloween Fleming Greelis. He grew up in Waterloo and graduated from high school there.
Vince attended college at Cedar Rapids first, then the University of Minnesota, graduating from the mortuary science department. He spent his internship at the Funeral Home of A.E. Henry in St. Paul and pursued his career in mortuary science first at Devil's Lake, No. Dak., then in Bemidji, and later purchasing a funeral home in Nashwak, Minn.
Vince met Edith Hancock at Grand Rapids, Minn. The couple were wed Aug. 1, 1940 at Waterloo, Iowa. They moved to Howard Lake, where they purchased the funeral home and furniture store from George Boxel.
The family stayed in Howard Lake until 1960, when they moved to St. Paul and operated a bowling business. They retired in 1968 and returned to Howard Lake.
During their retirement years, Vince and Edith spent winters in Sun City, Ariz. Vince spent his days hunting, fishing, and shooting skeet. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Waverly, Sportsman Club of Sun City, Ariz., and the Trap Shooting Club of Thief River Falls.
Vince passed away on March 31, 1999, having reached the age of 86 years and 18 days.
He is survived by his wife Edith and a son, Tom, both of Thief River Falls; a daughter, Linda Gemoets of Santa Cruz, Calif.; seven grandchildren: Michael Alberts, Kristian Valtrano, Kelly Melendex, Adam Gemoets, Scott Greelis, Rachel Greelis, and Thomas Greelis; and a sister, Virginia Vraz.
Vince was preceded in death by his parents John and Alloween; brothers and sister, Madaline Scukker, Jack Greelis, and Francis Greelis.
Funeral services were Wednesday, April 7, 1999, 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Waverly, Minn. with the Rev. Martin Shallbetter as celebrant. Music was by St. Mary's Choir and Patricia Munson. Interment followed at St. Mary's Church Cemetery in Waverly.
Casket bearers were Marv Decker, Gordy Jacobson, Joe Marketon, Jim Gallagher, Ed Marketon, and Joe Reardon.
Arrangements were by Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home, Inc., Cokato and Howard Lake.
