Edith Rose Greelis obituary 6/28/99


Edith Rose Greelis, age 82 of Thief River Falls, Minn.,
and formerly of Howard Lake, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at the Northwest
Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Visitation was Thursday, July 1, 5 to 8 p.m., at the Green
Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.
Funeral services were Friday, July 2, 10:30 a.m., at St.
Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, with visitation for one
hour prior to the service. The Rev. Tim Bushy presided at the funeral services.
Visitation was also from 10 a.m. to noon at Swanson-Peterson
Funeral Home, Howard Lake, on Saturday, July 3. Burial followed at 1 p.m.
at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waverly, with the Rev. Shellbetter presiding.
Edith was born Feb. 21, 1917, to John and Grace (Carpenter)
Hancock in Coleraine, Minn. She grew up and attended school in Coleraine,
and went on to attend nursing school in Grand Rapids, Minn., where she worked
as a nurse. After becoming a licensed vocational nurse, she also worked
at the hospital in Cokato, Minn. for a short time.
On Aug. 1, 1940, Edith married Vincent Greelis in Waterloo,
Iowa. They made their home in Howard Lake, where Vincent owned and operated
the mortuary and furniture store known as Greelis Funeral Home and Furniture.

After living in Howard Lake from 1940 to 1960, Edith and
Vincent moved to St. Paul, where they owned and operated the Midway Industrial
Bowl. In 1968, they retired back to Howard Lake. They then moved to Thief
River Falls in 1994.
Edith was a member of the Howard Lake Golf Club and St.
Mary’s Church Women’s Circle in Waverly. She was also active and loved playing
golf in Thief River Falls.
While in Thief River Falls, Edith was a member of St. Bernard’s
Catholic Church. She especially liked playing bridge with the ladies at
the Legion and the ladies from the golf club.
Edith is survived by one daughter, Linda (Richard) Gemoets,
Santa Cruz, Calif.; one son, Tom (Paula) Greelis of Thief River Falls; two
sisters, Maxine (Ilo) Mostoller of Jamestown, N.D. and Neysa (Woodrow) Cook
of Lake Almador Peninsula, Calif; seven grandchildren: Michael Alberts of
Los Angeles, Calif.; Kristin (Robert) Beltrano of Henderson, Nev.; Kelly
(Norbert) Melendez of San Francisco, Calif.; Adam Gemoets of Davis, Calif.;
Scott (Deb) Greelis of Moorhead, Minn.; and Rachel Greelis and Tommy Greelis
of Thief River Falls.
She was preeded in death by her parents; her husband Vincent
on March 31, 1999; one brother, Harvey; and four sisters: Leila, Eileen,
Aida and Faye.
