Edward Lee Gruhn obituary, 10/27/99


Edward Lee Gruhn, age 63 of Watertown, died Wednesday,
Oct. 27, 1999, following a two-year battle with colon cancer.
Edward was born Jan. 9, 1936, at Freeport Memorial Hospital,
Stephenson County, Freeport, Ill., the son of Stanley Gustav and Carrie
Elizabeth (Myers) Gruhn. He was the oldest of three sons.
He lived in Mt. Morris, Ill., from early childhood through
his high school graduation in 1956. After graduating from Northwestern Bible
College, Minneapolis, in 1960; he became a permanent resident of Minnesota.
Edward was an accomplished accordionist and he was a featured
soloist in many events in the 1940s and 1950s. In his teen years, he gave
accordion lessons out of his Mt. Morris family home. For a period of years,
he also gave private music lessons in accordion, guitar, and organ from
a studio in Minnetonka, Minn.
Ed loved his family’s cabin on the Prairie River at McGregor,
Minn. He was very fond of telling about the adventures that he had there
with his friend, Roger Martin.
In the early 1960s, Edward served in the Army Reserves.
He was an employee of General Mills, Minneapolis, and retired
from there in 1993.
As a member of the Watertown Evangelical Free Church, Watertown,
Minn., Edward enjoyed singing in the church choir, attending Bible studies,
and participating in the senior activities. The chorus, “Majesty”
became very special to him.
Edward is survived by his brother, Gerald Leroy Gruhn (Joy),
Leaf River, Ill.; three nephews, Douglas Gruhn, David Gruhn, and Robert
(Jennifer) Gruhn; and four grand nieces, Megan, Bethany and Alexia Gruhn;
and Chelsea Gruhn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley Gruhn,
who died Jan. 3, 1982; and Carrie Gruhn, who died Jan. 11, 1990; and a brother,
Ralph Edward, who died at birth in 1938.
A memorial service was at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999,
at the Watertown Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Paul Kling officiating.
Arrangements were by Johnson Funeral Home of Waconia.
