Lillian Marie Hess
Lillian Marie Hess, age 83 of Dassel, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at the Meeker County Memorial Hospital, Litchfield.
Lillian was born on a farm in Kingston Township, Meeker Co., Minn., on Jan. 21, 1916, the daughter of Matt A. and Hilda J. (Merila) Leppa. Lillian's parents were both born in Oulu Lanni, Finland.
Lillian attended Meeker Co. District No. 3 (Union School), North Kingston, and Meeker Co. District No. 1, Kingston, completing the eighth grade.
On Jan. 29, 1938, she married Herbert William Hess of Kingston. Herbert and Lillian dairy and crop farmed in Kingston and North Kingston Townships their entire married life, except for a short time when they rented the Dr. George Sherwood farm on the south edge of Kimball. They retired in 1969, but remained on the farm.
Lillian had been a resident of the Dassel Lakeside Community Home since Sept. 23, 1998.
As a homemaker, Lillian enjoyed flowers, quilt making, embroidery, reading, and bowling. She was a member of two Kimball senior citizen's bowling teams, the North Kingston Birthday Club, and the Kingston Senior Citizens group.
Lillian was also a member of Kingston Apostolic Lutheran Church.
She is survived by four children: Joyce Marie and husband, Rudy, Burgstaler; Rodney Herbert and wife, Loreen, Hess; and Robert Dale and wife, Barbara, Hess, all of Kimball; and Joanne Kay Pettit of Winsted; four grandchidren: Evan (Aimee) Burgstaler of Huron, S.D.; Lyle Burgstaler of Kimball; Denise Hess of Circle Pines; and Heather (David) Reischl of Kimball; and four great-grandchildren, Isabelle Emma Reischl and Tyler Ryan Reischl, both of Kimball; and Hanna Marie Burgstaler and Tara Christine Burgstaler, both of Huron, S.D.
She is further survived by sisters and brothers, Sophia Marks of Cokato, Evelyn Makela of Eagan, and Ben Leppa of Duluth; sisters-in-law, Alica Leppa of Dassel, Daisy Leppa of Litchfield, and Irene Leppa of Crystal, Minn.; a brother-in-law, John Auvinen of Litchfield; as well as many nieces and nephews, and other relatives.
Lillian is preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Axel #1 (Axil); brothers, Levi #1 (Leevi), Axel Frederick, Levi L., William, Oscar, Karl Matt (Charlie), Edwin, Walter (Pete) Leppa; and sisters, Anna Esther (Elmer) Lundeen, Helen (John) Auvinen, and Hanna (William) Besonen.
Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, 11 a.m., at Apostolic Lutheran Church of Kingston, with the Rev. Arvi Aho officiating. Interment was in Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery, Kingston.
Visitation was Wednesday, Jan. 5, 4 to 8 p.m., at Johnson Funeral Home, Dassel.
