Henry Hlavka Sr.
Mass of Christian Burial for Henry Hlavka Sr., 88, of Silver Lake was held on Wednesday, Dec. 22, from Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver, with the Rev. Robert Mraz officiating.
Mr. Hlavka died on Saturday, Dec.18, 1999, at his Silver Lake home.
Val Shamla was the organist, and the Holy Family Adult Choir sang.
Pallbearers were Robert Hlavka, Eric Hvalka, David Barton, James Hlavka, Traci Kallis, Krista Kallis, Dale Koktan and LeRoy Koktan. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Silver Lake.
Mr. Hlavka was born on Jan. 31, 1911, in Hutchinson Township, McLeod County, to Frank and Rose (Navratil) Hlavka. He received his education in the area schools and graduated from Silver Lake High School.
On June 10, 1942, Mr. Hlavka was united in marriage to Dorothy Koktan at St. Joseph's Church, Silver Lake.
Mr. Hlavka farmed, owned a trucking business and operated a sawmill.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, playing with his grandchildren and bird watching. He also liked to drive up north, watch the leaves change color and walk through the woods.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; children, Lois Eckhard, Steven Hlavka, Cheryl Kallis and Elizabeth Shellum; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two sons, Henry Jr. and Robert Hlavka; brothers and sisters, Elizabeth, Leonard, Frank, Mary, Margaret and Daniel.
