Donald William Lemke
Donald William Lemke, age 73 of Howard Lake, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999.
Donald was born Aug. 29, 1925, in Albion Township, the son of Charles and Sara Uecker Lemke. He was baptized Sept. 20, 1925, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Middleville Township by the Rev. Alfred Struefert, and confirmed in his faith at the same church April 2, 1939, by the Rev. William Kanning.
On June 23, 1948, Don was united in marriage to Dolores Erna Grambart at Salem Lutheran Church, Greenfield Township, by the Rev. William P. Haar. This union was blessed with the birth of four sons.
Don and Dolores made their home in Howard Lake and joined St. James Lutheran Church, where Don served on the stewardship board, board of elementary education, two terms as a trustee and on the decorating committee.
Don spent most of his life doing carpentry work, which he loved. He worked for Eldon Luhman and in 1953, went into partnership with Vernon Yager. When Vernon's health failed, Don went into partnership with Ed Luhman and in 1975, he started his own construction company.
Don and Dolores moved to Bay Lake in Deerwood, Minn. in 1986. Don continued to do carpentry work, spending summers on Bay Lake and winters in Mesa, Ariz.
While living at Bay Lake, Don became a member of Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, Garrison. He remained active doing various carpentry jobs for the church and overseeing the building of the church's addition.
While spending winters in Arizona, Don was an associate member of Eternal Life Lutheran Church, Mesa, Ariz.
In 1996, Don and Dolores returned to Howard Lake. On May 25, 1999, Don was called to his eternal rest at the age of 73 years, eight months and 29 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Lemke and Sarah Campbell; his step-father, Mark (Hoot) Campbell; and one son, Thomas.
Donald is survived by his wife Dolores of Howard Lake; three sons: Keith and his wife, Sally, of Buffalo; Wayne and special friend, Sheila Briesemeister, of Howard Lake; Lyle and his wife, Mary Jo, of St. Joseph; four grandsons; one granddaughter; three step-grandsons; and three great-granddaughters.
He is further survived by a sister, Elaine Chouinard of Eden Prairie; a brother, Gordon and his wife, Margie, of Mora; nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Friday, May 28, 1999, 2 p.m., at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. The organist was Diane Johnson, with special music by Dan Barth.
Interment followed at Howard Lake Cemetery with graveside military rites under the auspices of American Legion Post 145, Howard Lake.
Casket bearers were Jason Lemke, Dale Karels, Kevin Schiltz, Thomas Lemke, Josh Lemke, Bryan Schiltz, Justin LeClair, and Nicholas Lemke.
Arrangements were by Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home, Inc., Cokato and Howard Lake.
