Viola Lucinda Mahs
Funeral services for Viola Lucinda Mahs, 94, of Howard Lake and formerly of Hutchinson were held Wednesday, Nov. 1, from the Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Hutchinson, with the Rev. Greg Nelson officiating.
Mrs. Mahs died on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Howard Lake Good Samaritan Center in Howard Lake.
Organist was Joyce Piehl, and the duet of Len and Dori Johnson sang "In The Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset." The congregational hymn was "How Great Thou Art."
Pallbearers were Bill Piehl, Dick Baumetz, Don Baumetz, Russell Rickeman and Bob Sladek. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson.
Viola Lucinda Turnbull was born Dec. 27, 1905, in Glencoe to William J. and Lillian (Phillips) Turnbull. She grew up in the Glencoe area and graduated from Stevens Seminary in Glencoe in 1924. She taught school for the next two years.
She was united in marriage with Hugo Otto Mahs on Dec. 10, 1927, in Minneapolis, MN, They made Hutchinson their home throughout their married lives.
During her lifetime, Mrs. Mahs held several occupations. She ran a used garment exchange from her home, and also worked at the Bethlehem United Methodist Church, as secretary. She worked for an accountant for several years in Hutchinson and later did income tax, accounting and typing jobs from her home.
The couple shared 45 years of marriage, before Mr. Mahs died on Dec. 14, 1972. Mrs. Mahs continued living in Hutchinson, until she entered the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Center on Sept. 15, 1992.
Mrs. Mahs was a long-time member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Hutchinson, where she was active with the church library. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 32 of Glencoe.
She enjoyed traveling, crocheting, cooking and playing cards and checkers.
She also volunteered her time visiting nursing home residents, and she wasa Meals on Wheels driver. During her retirement years, she enjoyed eating meals out with her girlfriends.
Survivors include her son, Randall Jeffrey Sippel of Hackensack; grandson, Ricky Daugherty and wife, Tracy, of Fayetteville, N.C.; and nephew, William Turnbull of Hutchinson.
Mrs. Mahs was preceded in death by her husband, Hugo Mahs; parents; brothers, Leon and Glen Turnbull; and sisters, Hazel Turnbull and Gladys Nelson.
The Dobratz-Hantge Funeral Chapel of Hutchinson handled arrangements.
