Thomas John “Tom” Metkowski obituary 3/15/99


Thomas John “Tom” Metkowski, age 50 of Darwin,
passed away Monday, March 15, 1999 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, March 20, 11 a.m.,
at Church of St. John in Darwin with the Rev. Fred Fink officiating. Interment
was at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation was from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 19, at
the Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield and also on the morning
of the service. There was a prayer service at 7 p.m. on Friday at Johnson-Hagglund.
Tom was born May 6, 1948 in Glencoe to Leo and Mildred
(Posusta) Metkowski. He attend and graduated from the Silver Lake High School
in 1966. Tom attended Willmar Junior College for two years, the University
of Minnesota in St. Paul for one year, and graduated from the South Dakota
State University in Brookings with a teaching degree in agriculture in 1971.
After graduation, Tom taught agriculture, landscaping,
and welding at the Belgrade High School from 1971-1976. While he was in
Belgrade, he developed a computer program for agriculture. Tom also developed
test plot areas for various crops and set up an irrigation system to help
manage it.
Tom married Kathryn Aritt on Oct. 19, 1973 at Holy Trinity
Catholic Church in Winsted. In 1976, he and Kathy moved from Willmar to
Litchfield where he taught agriculture, landscaping, and welding at the
Litchfield Senior High School from 1976-1980.
Tom then started working for Cargill. He worked there until
the fall of 1982, when he started teaching at the Eden Valley-Watkins Senior
High School. He taught at Eden-Valley Watkins until 1988.
Along with teaching at these schools, Tom also was a Future
Farmers of America advisor.
In 1988, Tom became employed at Hutchinson Technology,
Inc. where he worked until the time of his death.
In 1977, Tom and Kathy moved to a home near Darwin. They
recently finished completely renovating this home.
Tom was a past president of the Darwin J.C.’s, Darwin Men’s
Club, and Darwin Lions Club. He was an active member of the Meeker County
Fair Board and the Darwin Rod and Gun Club. He was also a big supporter
of the Litchfield swim team of which his two daughters were members.
Tom loved gardening and nature. He enjoyed fishing and
hunting for both bear and deer, as well as cooking what he had caught. He
had become hooked on the Internet and everyone who knew Tom, knew he never
said, “No.”
Tom is survived by his wife Kathryn of Darwin; two daughters,
Jennifer and Jessica Metkowski, both of Darwin; one sister, Clarie (Dale)
Schreiner of Cincinnati, Ohio; one niece; one nephew; and one aunt, Irene
Fasching of Winsted.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Mildred
Metkowski; and his in-laws, Bud and Jen Aritt.
