Bernice Alice Nowak

Bernice Alice Nowak, age 67 of Silver Lake, Hale Township, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at her home.

Bernice was born May 24, 1933, at Glencoe, Minn., the daughter of Theodore and Anna (Urban) Kostecka. She attended Country School, District 29 for eight years, and Glencoe High School for four years.

On June 16, 1953, Bernice was joined in marriage to Arthur Nowak.

During her lifetime, Bernice was employed at Green Giant and Strutware, as well as doing housecleaning, and working with her husband on the farm.

Her hobbies included gardening, watching birds, cooking, baking, canning, and making kolaches. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren.

Bernice is survived by her husband Arthur Sr.; children: Shirley Nowak of Silver Lake; Barb Nowak of Glencoe; Nina (Keith) Stifter of Winsted; Randy (Pam) Nowak of Minong, Wis.; Julie Schuch of Glencoe; John (Kathy) Nowak of Cokato; Connie Nowak, Arthur Jr. (Karen) Nowak, and Barney Nowak, all of Silver Lake; and 15 grandchildren.

She is further survived by brothers and sisters: Gladys (Kenneth) Donnay of Glencoe; Marcella (Harold) Matousek of Glencoe; Richard (Beverly) Kostecka of Princeton; Taffy (Maggie) Kostecka of Garrison; and Harvey (Paulette) Kostecka of Norwood Young America.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; mother- and father-in-law, John and Mary Nowak; two sisters-in-law; and five brothers-in-law.

Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 5, 10 a.m., at Holy Family Church, Silver Lake, with the Revs. Bob Mraz and Gene Lozinski officiating. The organist was Alice Nowak and the Holy Family Adult Choir provided music, including "Prayer of St. Francis," "Stainless the Maiden," "Amazing Grace," "On Eagle's Wings," and "How Great Thou Art." Bernice's granddaughter Jillian Schuch sang a solo, "O Calvary's Lamb."

Pallbearers were James Dahlke, Tim Dahlke, Andrew Nowak, Daniel Nowak, Alan Kostecka, and Ronald Donnay. Interment was at St. Adalbert Cemetery, Silver Lake.

Arrangements were by Maresh Funeral Home, Silver Lake.
