Lavina Martena Sauer obituary, 5/25/2000

Lavina Martena Sauer, age 89 of Howard Lake, died Thursday,
May 25, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center, Howard Lake, where she had been
a resident since Nov. 9, 1997.
A family service was conducted by the Rev. Joel Swedberg
at the care center with Lavina’s family from Howard Lake: Donna and husband,
Kenny Christiansen; grandson, Robby and wife, Theresa, and great-grandchildren,
Miranda and Donovan; and grandson, Gene and wife, Pam, and great-grandchildren,
Trevor and Austin.
A memorial service will follow Sunday, June 25, 2 p.m.,
at the Calvery Presbyterian Church, Ryder, N.D., with the Rev. Jonathan
Stark officiating.
Lavina was born Feb. 6, 1911, to Martin Andrew and Bertina
Serena (Petersen) Peterson in Washburn, N.D. She helped raise her youngest
sister, Leona, and brother, Floyd, after her parents died her dad
in 1927, and her mom in 1929.
Lavina lived on a farm, ran a country store, and worked
in a bakery.
On Oct. 17, 1944, she married Carl Arndt Sauer. They farmed
until moving to Kenmore, N.D. in 1957, where they bought part ownership
in the International Harvester dealership, “Es Ca Del.”
Lavina worked at the Coast-to-Coast store; then, in 1960,
was a partner in building a bowling alley with a restaurant, offices, and
apartments. She ran the restaurant for five years.
She and Carl raised her twin niece and nephew, Donna and
Donovan, after her brother Leonard’s wife, Agnes, died when the children
were 13. Donna feels very blessed to have had two moms, as she considers
Lavina to have been a real “Mom” to her.
In 1974, Carl and Lavina retired to Minot, N.D.
Lavina loved helping others, gardening, sewing, bowling,
bingo, and traveling.
Survivors include her sisters, Lucille Wood of Bismarck,
N.D.; Laura Erb of Minot, N.D.; Luverna White and husband, Ira, of Warren,
Minn.; and Leona Zahnow and husband, Ray, of Max, N.D.; sisters-in-law,
Mildred Peterson, Gladys Peterson, and Jeanice Officer, all of Minot, N.D.;
and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Lavina was preceded in death by her parents, her husband
Carl; nephew, Donovan; brothers, Lial, Leslie, Leighton, Leonard, Loraine,
Lynn, Leroy, and Lloyd; sisters, Lillian Romsas, Lydia Peterson, Lenora
Eidahl; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and other nieces and nephews.
