Elmer Edwin Schmieg
Elmer Edwin Schmieg, age 84 of Howard Lake, passed away at his home Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, while surrounded by family. He had been diagnosed with leukemia in April.
Elmer was born June 23, 1915, in McLeod County to Fred and Mathilda (Drawert) Schmieg. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church, Winsted, Minn., on July 25, 1915 by the Rev. Greve. He was confirmed March 23, 1929, at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, by the Rev. C. G. Seltz.
In 1923, the family moved to a farm in Victor Township, presently owned by his oldest son, Gary.
On April 25, 1937, Elmer was united in marriage to Orella Luhman at St. James. Their 62 years together were blessed by the birth of seven children.
Elmer and Orella made their home on a farm southwest of Howard Lake, presently owned by their son, Harlan. They farmed together for 51 years, until retiring in 1988 and moving to their present home in Howard Lake.
As a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Elmer served on the school board and cemetery board. He especially enjoyed working with Mr. Stelzer and the committee on the 1951 addition to the school.
Elmer also enjoyed carpentry work and helping his children with various building and repair projects. Music was always an important part of his life. In his retirement years, Elmer enjoyed doing yard work around his home. The best times of his life were the times spent with his family.
After several difficult days of battling his illness, Elmer went to be with his Lord, at the age of 84 years, two months, and 29 days.
He will greatly missed by his loving and faithful wife Orella; five sons: Gary and wife, Estelle, Dale and wife, Evelyn, Harlan, Merlyn and wife, Karen, Mark and wife, Barbara, all of Howard Lake; two daughters, Carolyn and husband, Rev. Dane Compton of Garfield, Minn.; and Beverly and husband, David Allen of Howard Lake; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Schmieg and Irene Lindahl; nieces; nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mathilda Schmieg; one sister, Elsie Horsch; two brothers, Clifford Schmieg and an infant brother; one grandson, Ricky Schmieg; and one daughter-in-law, Judy Schmieg.
