Elmer Edwin Schmieg, age 84 of Howard Lake, passed away
at his home Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, while surrounded by family. He had
been diagnosed with leukemia in April.
Elmer was born June 23, 1915, in McLeod County to Fred
and Mathilda (Drawert) Schmieg. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church,
Winsted, Minn., on July 25, 1915 by the Rev. Greve. He was confirmed March
23, 1929, at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, by the Rev. C. G. Seltz.
In 1923, the family moved to a farm in Victor Township,
presently owned by his oldest son, Gary.
On April 25, 1937, Elmer was united in marriage to Orella
Luhman at St. James. Their 62 years together were blessed by the birth of
seven children.
Elmer and Orella made their home on a farm southwest of
Howard Lake, presently owned by their son, Harlan. They farmed together
for 51 years, until retiring in 1988 and moving to their present home in
Howard Lake.
As a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Elmer served
on the school board and cemetery board. He especially enjoyed working with
Mr. Stelzer and the committee on the 1951 addition to the school.
Elmer also enjoyed carpentry work and helping his children
with various building and repair projects. Music was always an important
part of his life. In his retirement years, Elmer enjoyed doing yard work
around his home. The best times of his life were the times spent with his
family.
After several difficult days of battling his illness, Elmer
went to be with his Lord, at the age of 84 years, two months, and 29 days.
He will greatly missed by his loving and faithful wife
Orella; five sons: Gary and wife, Estelle, Dale and wife, Evelyn, Harlan,
Merlyn and wife, Karen, Mark and wife, Barbara, all of Howard Lake; two
daughters, Carolyn and husband, Rev. Dane Compton of Garfield, Minn.; and
Beverly and husband, David Allen of Howard Lake; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren;
two sisters-in-law, Mildred Schmieg and Irene Lindahl; nieces; nephews,
and a host of relatives and friends.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mathilda
Schmieg; one sister, Elsie Horsch; two brothers, Clifford Schmieg and an
infant brother; one grandson, Ricky Schmieg; and one daughter-in-law, Judy
Schmieg.
Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at St.
James Lutheran Church with the Revs. Martin Schoenfeld and Michael Nirva
officiating. The sermon text was his confirmation verse, Matthew 24:13.
Diane Johnson served as the organist. Special music was by David and Bev
Allen. Interment was at the St. James Cemetery on Dutch Lake.
A prayer service was on Friday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m.
Pallbearers were Elmer’s grandsons: Michael Schmieg, Robert
Schmieg, Paul Compton, Joel Compton, Jason Schmieg, Dan Schmieg, Timothy
Schmieg and Cord Allen.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home
of Howard Lake.
