Helen Leota Johnson
Funeral services for Helen Leota Johnson, age 92 of Dassel, were Tuesday, Dec. 19, from the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Dassel. Helen died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the Dassel Lakeside Community Home.
Helen was born Oct. 5, 1908, at Butterfield, Minn., the daughter of Otto and Lydia Anderson. The Anderson family moved to New York Mills where Helen graduated from the New York Mills High School.
On May 26, 1934, Helen was united in marriage to Walter Johnson at New York Mills. They resided in New York Mills until September 1945, when they purchased the Dassel Dispatch newspaper and moved to Dassel, where Helen has since resided.
Helen worked alongside her husband as an owner of the Dassel Dispatch newspaper from 1945 until they sold the paper to their daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Dan Holje, 1973. She continued to help out at the newspaper office until 1995, when she, along with Walter, retired.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Walter, who died on Oct. 7 of this year; and by two sisters, Muriel Starr and Majorie Laugen.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in law, Carolyn and Dan Holje of Dassel; grandsons, Craig and wife, Sara, and Derek; a brother, Harold, and his wife, Marge Anderson of New York Mills; and sisters, Lorraine and husband, Gene Peterfeso of Woodbury, Vergel Anderson of St. Paul, and Lenore Anderson of Robbinsdale.
The Rev. Paula Geister-Jones officiated for the funeral services. Special music was provided by Helen's grandson, Craig Holje, soloist; and quartet, Sheryl Upton, Sheryl Faust, Jon Benson, and Mike Sylvester. Florine Osness served as organist and congregational hymns were sung.
David Power, James (Tex) Haapala, Roger Asplin, Roger Gilmer, Gerald Bollman, and Gerald Peikert served as casket bearers.
Interment followed at Dassel Cemetery.
