Bertha Martha Florentine Hafemann
Bertha M. Hafemann, age 99, of Lester Prairie, passed away
Dec. 16, 2001, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
Bertha Martha Florentine Hafemann was born the daughter
of Carl and Amelia (Mielke) Zuehl April 6, 1902 in Camden Township. The
Rev. Theo Rolf baptized Bertha May 4, 1902, at St. John’s Lutheran Church
in Hollywood Township. She was confirmed in her Lutheran faith April 16,
1916 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in New Germany.
Bertha was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church
in New Germany. She was raised in New Germany and attended Camden Township
country school through the eighth grade.
She was united in marriage to Albert Hafemann at St. Mark’s
Lutheran Church Feb. 10, 1921.
In her spare time, she loved to garden flowers and vegetables,
and had many begonias outside and many violets inside the house, as well
as many other flowers.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Amelia
Zuehl; husband, Albert; son-in-laws, Elmer Schroeder and Omar Hartwig; brothers,
Bill, Henry, Otto, Fred, and Gust; sisters, Anna Ogitzak, Lena Heldt, and
Emelia Zuehl.
She is survived by her children, Myrtle Schroeder of New
Germany, Viola Hartwig of Waconia, LaVon (Norman) Venske of Lester Prairie;
grandchildren, Ronald (Sue) Hartwig, Barbara (Harlan) Weege, Lyle (Joanne)
Hartwig, Nancy (Kenneth) Drew, Gerald (Cindy) Henning, and Kenneth Henning
and friend, Janet Krogstad; and step-grandson, Randy Venske.
She is further survived by her great-grandchildren, Deborah
(Timothy) Lynch, Brian (Amy) Weege, Michael Hartwig, Nicholas Hartwig, Lotti
(Jason) Roth, Melissa Hartwig, Alex Henning, Joey Henning, and Emily Henning;
great-great-grandchildren, Rachel Lynch, Amanda Lynch, Victoria Lynch, Kendra
Weege, and Brendan Weege; sister-in-law, Lillian Zuehl-Lempke of Lester
Prairie; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec 19, 2001, 11 a.m.,
at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in New Germany. Officiating was the Rev. Allen
Holthus.
Vernice Menth was the organist, and the congregational
hymns were “I’m But a Stranger Here,” “My Course Is Run,
Praise God, My Course Is Run,” and “Jesus Lead Thou On.”
The soloist was Nicolas Uecker and he sang “How Great Thou Art.”
Serving as casket bearers were Harlan Weege, Ronald Hartwig,
Lyle Hartwig, Kenneth Drew, Gerald Henning, and Kenneth Henning.
Visitation was Tuesday evening at the Paul-McBride Funeral
Chapel in Lester Prairie. Interment was in St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery
in New Germany.
Arrangements were made with the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel
of Lester Prairie.
