Alma L. Kuenzel, 102
Alma L. Kuenzel, age 102, of Waconia, and formerly of Norwood
Young America and Lester Prairie, passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001 at the
Waconia Good Samaritan Center.
Alma Louisa Heuer was born the daughter of William and
Anna (Sonnenberg) Sept. 26, 1899 in Corlis Township of Ottertail County,
Minn. Alma was baptized as an infant in the Corlis Church Oct. 22, 1899
by the Rev. C. F. Arndt. She attended the local district school.
Alma was confirmed in the faith by the Rev. A. Strewfert
at the church in Hewitt, Minn. She attended high school and later, Martin
Luther College in New Ulm, where Alma received her teacher certificate.
Alma went back home after college to help her family after
her father’s death. She then moved to the Cologne area to help her uncle
after her aunt’s death.
Alma was united in marriage with Gottfried Schmidt at Zion
Lutheran Church of Benton Township by the Rev. AmEnd. The couple made their
home on a farm in Benton Township. Gottfried died in 1959.
Alma and her family remained on the farm after her husband’s
death.
Alma married Alex Kuenzel at Zion Lutheran Church by the
Rev. Klemp, and the Rev. Rasch March 7, 1976.
The couple moved to Lester Prairie.
After Alex’s death in 1983, Alma continued to live in Lester
Prairie until Nov. 1988, when she became a resident at the Peace Villa apartments
in Norwood Young America.
Alma enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She spent much of
her time in the garden. Since 1977, Alma has been at the Waconia Good Samaritan
Center. It was there that she entered her eternal rest Sunday, Nov. 25,
2001, reaching the age of 102 years, one month, and 29 days.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Gottfried
Schmidt, and Alex Kuenzel, adopted son, Raymond Schmidt; step-son Clyde
Kuenzel; six sisters; and three brothers.
Alma is survived by her daughters, Milda (Fred) Bartels
of Cologne, Esther (Willard) Sauter of Bigfork; grandchildren, Joyce (Herb)
Lins of Florida, Bonnie (John) of Buffalo, Roger (Natalie) of Cologne, Ruby
Sauter of Chaska, Rickey (MaryJo) Sauter of Cologne; four great-grandchildren,
and five great-great-grandchildren; step-children, Dennis (Sylvia) Kuenzel
of Lester Prairie, Allen (JoAnn) Kuenzel of Burnsville, Nora Kuenzel of
California, Gladys (Randall) Tonn of Texas; step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren;
sister-in-law, Elsie Czamanski of Colorado, Elizabeth Heuer of California,
Selma Heuer of Fergus Falls; as well as many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Alma were Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001,
11 a.m., at the Zion Lutheran Church of Cologne, with the Rev. Eric Zacharias.
Congregational hymns were “Abide With Me,”
“I Know That My Redeemer Lives,” and “Draw
Us To Thee.” Julianne Marcsisak was the organist for the service.
Alma’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren served as
casketbearers.
Interment was in the church cemetery next to her husband
Gottfried Schmidt.
Visitation and an evening prayer service by Rev. Zacharias
was Tuesday, Nov. 27 at the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Norwood Young
America.
