Ardis Jane Lorentz, 88
Ardis Jane Lorentz, age 88, of Howard Lake, passed away Oct. 29, 2001 at the Meeker County Memorial Hospital.
Ardis was born to Samuel and Minnie (Sexton) Hess Feb. 4, 1913 in Victor Township, rural Howard Lake.
She attended "Old District 66" in Howard Lake, graduating in 1931. Following graduation, she attended Cokato Teacher's Training (normal school) in 1932. She taught in Meeker and Wright county schools for five and one half years.
Ardis married Clarence August Lorentz from rural Annandale July 21, 1937. Their marriage was blessed with 13 children.
Ardis was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Howard Lake. Her parents and siblings were all baptized and become members on the same day.
Ardis often shared memories with her grandchildren about attending country school, carrying school lunches in quart jars to be heated by the hot pot-bellied stove, which also was the heat source.
She would also speak of her large gardens and the different pace of life for farmers with horses. She was a kind and compassionate mother, always putting the needs of her family first.
Ardis enjoyed sewing, quilting, and mending for her family. Cooking for her family was quite a job. And she was always careful in preparing her children for the independence they would need as they left home.
Ardis took many adult community education classes to keep up with changing methods of learning.
As an adult, she continued to keep in contact with many of her students from over the years. Her home was always open to many people.
Her nieces and nephews called her "Aunt Artie," and she liked to play cards and games with her grandchildren, as well as teaching them to sew, embroidery, finger crochet, garden, and can food.
As a youth, Ardis had diphtheria, which left her with a raspy throat that affected her singing. The grandchildren still liked to have Grandma rock and sing to them.
When Clarence suffered a stroke in 1967, Ardis became the source of strength and determination both Clarence and other family members needed. She cared for Clarence at home for 25 years until his death April 2, 1992.
In addition to her husband Clarence, Ardis was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Minnie Hess; an infant daughter, Mary Jane; brother, Edward Hess; and sister, Alice (Roy) Bakeberg.
Ardis is survived by her children, David (Jean) of Rogers, Rose (Richard) Barberg of Howard Lake, Dale (Agnes) of Waverly, Albert (Marlene) of Howard Lake, Eva (Royal) Moulton of St. Paul, Eugene (Terry) of Howard Lake, Joyce (Herbert) Smith of Maple Lake, Sue (John) Tapio of Hutchinson, Leo of Glencoe, Shirley (Martin) Javurek of Pierre, S.D., Michael (Cher) of Montrose, and Trudy (Kelly) Clausen of Indianapolis, Ind.,
