Lavon Luhman, age 85 of Howard Lake, died Friday, Jan.
5, 2001, at the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Center.
Lavon was born Aug. 14, 1915, in Pipestone, Minn., the
daughter of Carl and Mary (Eggers) Hansen. She was baptized into the Christian
faith Sept. 10, 1915, by the Rev. H. Bohnkoff at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church,
Pipestone; and confirmed in her faith Sept. 23, 1928, by the Rev. A. Engelhardt
at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Rosholt, S.D.
Lavon graduated high school as the valedictorian of her
class.
On March 8, 1936, Lavon was united in marriage to Walter
Luhman at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, by the Rev. C. G. Seltz.
This union was blessed with the birth of three sons.
Lavon and Walter owned and operated the Lakeview Cafe and
a local apple orchard. Lavon also worked at the Super Valu store in Howard
Lake.
An active member of St. James Lutheran Church, Lavon served
as superintendent of Sunday school. She was also a member of the Lutheran
Women’s Missionary League (LWML), and was involved with the Lydia Bible
study class. In addition, Lavon was instrumental in the church’s production
of the Living Nativity, presented at Christmas time from 1986 to 1996.
An excellent seamstress, Lavon used her talents willingly.
At the time of her death, she had reached the age of 85
years, four months, and 22 days.
She is survived by her sons, Richard (Elizabeth) Luhman
of Red Wing, Robert (Doris) Luhman of Dassel, and Keith (Lorraine) Luhman
of Howard Lake; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews,
and a host of relatives and friends.
Lavon was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mary
Hansen; stepmother, Augusta Hansen; husband, Walter; one brother, Lorentz;
and two sisters, Leona and Luella.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 8, at St. James Lutheran
Church, Howard Lake, with the Revs. Martin Schoenfeld and Michael Nirva
officiating. Special music was provided by the LWML choir, with Nancy Butterfass
serving as organist. Interment was at the St. James Cemetery on Dutch Lake.
Serving as pallbearers were her grandchildren: Steve Luhman,
Tim Luhman, Phillip Luhman, Mark Luhman, Jenny Christopherson, Nicolet Berkey,
Matthew Luhman, Tiffany Luhman, and Tascha Luhman.
Visitation was Sunday, Jan. 7, 4 to 8 p.m., at Swanson-Peterson
Funeral Home of Howard Lake, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.; and also
one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Arrangements were by Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard
Lake.
