Harold J. Prehn, 87

Funeral services for Harold John Prehn, age 87, of Lester Prairie, were Thursday, March 8, 2001, from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato. Harold died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at St. Mary’s Care Center, Winsted.

Harold was born the son of Fred and Sophie (Engelmann) Prehn Oct. 16, 1913, in Bergen Township, McLeod County. He was baptized Nov. 16, 1913, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato by the Rev. R. Zwintscher; and confirmed by the same April 10, 1927.

Harold attended St. John’s Parochial School and country school.

On Aug. 16, 1936, Harold was united in marriage to Luella E. Kruschke at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Lester Prairie. The couple made their home in Bergen Township, where they engaged in farming, until 1958.

Harold also worked for the veterinarian in Lester Prairie for a few years, and then operated the bakery in Lester Prairie with Luella in the early 1960s. Following that, he went to work for Advance Machine, Spring Park, for nine years.

A very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Harold was a member of the church choir for 50 years, a member of its Mens Club, and served various positions, including as church elder.

He also enjoyed listening to music, dancing, bowling, card playing, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Marvin Prehn.

He is survived by his wife, Luella; sons Glenn Prehn (wife, Marjal) of Rochester, Virgil Prehn (wife, Jeannie) of Springfield, VA, and Ralph Prehn (wife, Diane) of Lester Prairie; grandchildren Beth Grassle of Rochester, Laurie Honig (husband Tim), Lynda Prehn, and Larry Prehn (wife, Nancy), all of Virginia; Shelly Dowdle (husband Sean) of Maryland, Stacey Smith (husband Ken) of Virginia, Dan Prehn (wife Andi) of Oregon, and Dana Prehn (fiancé Daryl Hoof) of Lester Prairie.

Harold is further survived by great-grandchildren Carly Grassle, Miriah, Kylee and Leah Honig; Cameron Dowdle, and Mykal Weissenfluh; sisters Lorna Matthews, and Dorothy Mueller (husband John), all of Hamburg; sisters-in-law Orvilla Prehn of Glencoe, Lorna Wilkens of Plato, Leona Wroge of Lester Prairie, Eldora Miller of Plato, and Laura Kruschke of Lester Prairie, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

The Rev. Bruce Laabs officiated at the 11 a.m. funeral service. The organist was William Niebuhr. Congregational hymns were “I’m But A Stranger Here,” and “What A Friend We Have in Jesus.” The St. John’s choir sang “Everybody Ought to Know,” and “Asleep in Jesus.” Interment was in the church cemetery.

Casket bearers were Orville Wilkens, Robert Kruschke, Roger Wroge, Warren Prehn, Larry Mueller, and Ronald Mueller. Honorary casket bearers were Harold’s grandchildren.

Visitation and evening prayer service took place Wednesday, March 7 at the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel, Lester Prairie.
