Herbert S. Rowe
Herbert S. Rowe, age 74 of Grand Rapids, Minn., and formerly of Howard Lake, died at home Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, with his family present.
Herb was born March 27, 1926, in Eveleth, to Percy and Helen (Hill) Rowe. He attended Eveleth public schools and junior college; receiving a bachelor of science degree from St. Cloud State University with majors in biology and library science, and minors in English and history.
He continued his education at the University of Minnesota where he earned a master of science degree in library science. He did additional graduate work at Western Michigan University.
Herb served in the Navy for a total of eight years during World War II and the Korean War, seeing action in the Atlantic, Pacific, and mainland China.
After his military service, he taught and served as librarian in Howard Lake, and was head librarian in Rochester and Hibbing, Minn. His career in education spanned 33 years.
On Dec. 23, 1950, Herb married Frances Melinsky in Howard Lake.
Herb was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Nashwauk, with affiliations to York Rite and Zurah Shrine, a member of St. Perin's Society, Torpedomen's Assoc-iation, former American Legion Commander, Boy Scout Master, and held numerous church offices.
After retirement, he and his wife taught English in Poland and China through Global Volunteers.
Herb is survived by his wife Frances; children, Michael (Susan) Rowe of Plano, Texas, and Jonathan (Christel) Rowe of Grand Rapids; honorary daughter, Linda (Ralph) Halvorson of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; a brother, Leonard (Rae) Rowe of North St. Paul; grandchildren, Scottie, Charlie, Kathryn, and Alyson Rowe; and honorary granddaughter, Nina Becker.
A memorial service took place Friday, Feb. 9, 11 a.m., at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, with the Rev. George Gilbertson officiating. The organist was Jan Bilden, John Haynes was the soloist, and Collin Zaffke played the bagpipe.
