Allegra Smith
Allegra Smith, a long-time educator, age 83, of LeSueur,
died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Minnesota Valley Health Center at
LeSueur.
She was born in St. Paul, Minn. July 9, 1917 to Lillian
M. Lunde.
At the age of seven, Allegra was adopted by her uncle and
his wife, Elmer and Clara Marie Lunde, in Minneapolis. She attended grade
school in Wisconsin and Minneapolis, and graduated from Roosevelt High School,
Minneapolis, in 1935.
Allegra’s college years were spent in River Falls, Wis.
and Fargo, N.D., where she graduated from North Dakota State University.

She was a teacher in Willow City, N.D. and, then, in various
schools in Minnesota, where she taught English, music, physical education,
drama and was a principal.
On Aug. 25, 1951, she married C. Vernon Smith, from Howard
Lake. In the fall of 1951, Allegra and Vernon moved to LeSueur, where her
husband had a teaching position.
They had three children, Carla, Allyn and Molly. When Molly
attended school, A11egra agreed to help out the faculty at Henderson school,
teaching music, temporarily, but remained on the faculty for 20 years, eventually
as the school librarian. She retired in 1980.
Allegra served for a number of years as the organist at
the Presbyterian Church in LeSueur, and was a member of the United Methodist
Church, where she sung in the choir for many years.
She was a member of the St. Peter Choral Society for 12
years, Monday Club, Hospital Auxiliary, Community Choir, LeSueur Museum
Board of Directors, and the American Association of University Women (A.A.U.W).

Allegra and her husband founded a Recorder Ensemble that
has been active in LeSueur for many years. They were also Grand Marshalls
for LeSueur Giant Days Celebration and were voted LeSueur County Outstanding
Senior Citizens.
Survivors include her husband C. Vernon; son, Allyn Smith,
and his wife, Kaye, of Shoreview; daughters, Carla Smith of Bend, Ore.,
and Molly Smith of Mankato; and three grandchildren: Adam Charles Smith,
Erin Elizabeth Smith, and Julia Marie Smith.
Funeral services were Monday, April 30, 11 a.m., at the
United Methodist Church, LeSueur. Rev. William N. Kerr officiated. Interment
was in the Mound Cemetery, LeSueur.
Visitation was Sunday, 4-8 p.m., at the Kolden Funeral
Home, LeSueur, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Sunday.
