Doris (June) Ruth Engel was born June 22, 1908, north of Howard Lake, the daughter of Fred and Dora (nee Kallenbach) Fiedler. She was the ninth child of 13.

She was united in marriage to Walter Engel at Buffalo Sept. 3, 1924. This union was blessed with the births of four sons, Duane, Glen, Roger, and Eugene.
