Alma Lena Engel
Alma Lena Engel, age 97, of Howard Lake, passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Good Samaritan Care Center, Howard Lake.
Alma Lena Engel was born Sept. 28, 1905, in Hanover, the daughter of Fred and Bertha (nee Bechtold) Schendel.
She was baptized Oct. 15, 1905, by the Rev. William Haar at Salem Lutheran Church, Greenfield. She was confirmed June 8, 1919, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, by the Rev. E.G. Nachtsheim.
She was united in marriage to Louis Engel Oct. 9, 1924, at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, by the Rev. A.L. Oetjen. This union was blessed with the births of four children.
They farmed for 25 years and made their home in the Howard Lake area where Alma volunteered as a cook at the St. James School kitchen. She also worked for 16 years as a cook at the Howard Lake Public School.
She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, baking cookies, and needle work. Over the years she crocheted about 100 afghans for her family and friends.
Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren were very important to her. She was affectionately known as "Tony Grandma." She was a humble person who attended church regularly.
Following a short illness that caused her to enter the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Center at the end of August, she was called to her eternal rest at the age of 96 years, 11 months and 15 days.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Bertha Schendel; husband Louis Engel; four brothers: Arthur Schendel, Roy Schendel, Alvin Schendel, and Gilbert Schendel; three sisters: Lillian Johnson, Elda Engel, and Mabel Mahlstedt; son-in-law Oliver Erickson; granddaughter Mary Forsythe; and great-grandson Daniel Greeley.
She is survived by her children Elwood (Marvel) Engel, Vernon Engel, Evelyn (Dean) Wallentine, Jean (Ron) Wikstrom; and seven grandchildren: Jim Engel, Diane Greeley, Sandy Engel, Ron Erickson, Mark Erickson, Joel Wikstrom, and Scott Wikstrom.
She is further survived by nine great-grandchildren: Amy Hance, Aaron Forsythe, Amanda Forsythe, Angela McClelland, Jacob Greeley, Samuel Greeley, Clarisse Wikstrom, Eleanor Mary Wikstrom, and Matthew Erickson; two great-great-grandchildren: Gabriel Hance and Elijah Hance; brother Fred Schendel; nieces; nephews, and a host of friends and relatives.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, with the Rev. Michael Nirva and Rev. Martin Schoenfeld officiating.
The organist was Nancy Butterfass, with special music by Alma's friends and soloist Marge Stueven. Interment was at the Howard Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers were her grandsons and great-grandsons, Jim Engel, Ron Erickson, Mark Erickson, Joel Wikstrom, Scott Wikstrom, Aaron Forsythe, Jacob Greeley, and Samuel Greeley.
Arrangements were made by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake and Cokato.
