Mary Weinbeck Lamothe
Mary Weinbeck Lamothe, age 84 and longtime Winsted funeral director, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at St. Mary's Care Center.
She was born July 29, 1918 in Winsted, the daughter of Henry and Anna Rohling Weinbeck.
Mary graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Winsted in 1935. She later attended St. Catherine's College and the University of Minnesota, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree and received her mortician's license.
She was a third generation Winsted funeral director from the Weinbeck family. After graduating from college, Mary assisted her father in the operation of Weinbeck Furniture and Undertaking.
Her father, Henry Weinbeck Jr., died in 1945, and following his death, the furniture business was sold.
In 1953, Mary purchased a site for the funeral home on the south end of Winsted and the business moved out of the Weinbeck home. Mary and the Wolter Funeral Home staff continued to serve families there for many years.
In 1964, Mary married Amable Lamothe and moved out to a farm where she also cared for Amable's sick mother.
She was known and loved by everyone who knew her for her generosity, her caring attitude, and helpfulness to anyone who called on her. The children in her life were especially loved. Many of them were drawn to her and called her "Mom" or "Grandma." She was also known as the "Apple Lady" at Halloween time.
Mary was a lifelong resident of Winsted and an active member of Holy Trinity Parish. She also belonged to St. Anne's Society and to Holy Family Council #204.
Mary was much loved and will be missed by her family and friends in Winsted and the surrounding areas.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Benjamin Wolter and her second husband: Amable Lamothe, parents Henry and Anna Weinbeck Jr., and by her four brothers: John, Eugene, Albert and Leo Weinbeck.
Survived by her son: John (Marilyn) Wolter of Bloomington; grandchildren Lisa, John, and Steven Wolter and their mother Gayle; seven great-grandchildren; a brother: Benedict (Irene) Weinbeck of Winsted; two sisters: Margret (Jerome) Weinbeck Nouis of Blaine and sister Sr. Alexis Weinbeck, SSSF of Milwaukee; many other relatives and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Lamothe took place Tuesday, Nov. l9, at 11 a.m., at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. Father Paul L. Wolf was the Celebrant for the Mass and interment followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Friends called Monday, Nov. 18th from 4-8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Chapel in Winsted. A combined St. Anne's and Holy Family Council Rosary was recited at 4:30 p.m. and a parish prayer service took place at 7 p.m.
Scott Herring, Bernie Lueck, Benny Weinbeck, Jason Weinbeck, Bruce Lamott, Steven Wolter, and Richard Parks served as casket bearers.
The Chilson Funeral Chapel in Winsted served the family.
