Leonard "Zeke" Penaz
Leonard "Zeke" Penaz of Silver Lake, entered his eternal rest at his residence Aug. 27, 2002, at the age of 80 years, six months, and four days.
Leonard "Zeke" George Penaz was born the son of Richard and Mary (Teply) Penaz Feb. 23, 1922, in Hale Township.
He was baptized May 7, 1922, at the Czech Brethren Presbyterian Church in Silver Lake by the Rev. Kucera. Zeke was also confirmed at the same church by Rev. Mzarek May 23, 1937.
Leonard attended and graduated from Silver Lake High School. After graduating high school, Leonard moved to California for one year, and then entered into the United States Army, serving for three years in the 107th Tank Battalion.
Leonard was united in marriage to June Posusta Sept. 16, 1947, also at the Czech Brethren Presbyterian Church in Silver Lake.
Zeke worked for many years at the Hutchinson Creamery, the co-op in Hutchinson, and was a city maintenance man for the City of Silver Lake.
He spent many hours mowing the church lawn and shoveling the snow. In his spare time, Leonard loved to travel, listen to polka music, build wood furniture and toys, and read, but he especially loved sports.
He was a ball player through and through, even playing on an all left-handed fast pitch softball team.
Leonard was a family man and showed it in a variety of ways. He did things with his family, from a family trip every summer to the slumber party every Christmas.
Leonard also taught his family many things, like to have a faith in God, and how to be family-minded also.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mary Penaz; wife June Penaz; and brother Harlow Penaz (wife: Adeline).
Leonard is survived by his daughter, Jacquelyn (Roger) Vanderlinde of Waverly; son, Bruce (Marvel) Penaz of Winsted; grandchildren Sara (Ben) Hampstead, Laura (Dan) Bloom, Amy Penaz, Kimberly Penaz, Alison Penaz, and Mychal Penaz; great-grandchild Amber Bloom; brother Clarence (Mary Ann) Penaz of Minnetonka; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services for Leonard "Zeke" G. Penaz were Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Faith Presbyterian Church in Silver Lake. Officiating was the Rev. Deanna Reikow.
The organist was Barb Wawrzyniak, and the congregational hymns were "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace." Mary Trelstad was the soloist, singing "Softly and Tenderly" and "On Eagle's Wings."
Serving as casket bearers were Ken Merrill, Bill Merrill, Dale Penaz, Joe Penaz, Jim Penaz, and John Penaz.
Visitation was Thursday evening at the Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake. Interment was in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Silver Lake.
