Funeral services for Carl Schmidt, 89, of Lester Prairie
were held on Sunday, Oct. 6, from St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester
Prairie. Officiating was the Rev. Gerald Schwanke.
Mr. Schmidt died on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Glencoe Regional
Health Services.
The organist was Mary Mielke, and soloist Lawrence Biermann
sang “Lazt Mich Gehn.” The congregational hymns were “I
Am Content,” “Abide With Me,” “In the Garden” and
“I Am But a Stranger Here.”
Pallbearers were Dennis Schmidt, James Vollmer, Janice
Tonn, Craig Schmidt, Justin Heldt and Jared Heldt. Honorary pallbearers
were David Arndt, Gordon Griesmann, Terrese Birkholz, Rebecca Birkholz and
Rachel Schmidt. Interment was in the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Lester
Prairie.
Mr. Schmidt was born to Henry and Dorothea (Ritter) Schmidt
Sr. on May 20, 1913, in Chicago Ill. He was baptized on June 15, 1913, at
St. John’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Paul Luecke in Chicago. On April
10, 1927, he was confirmed into the faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church
by the Rev. R Zwentscher in Plato.
Mr. Schmidt was united in marriage to Edna Tonn on June
29, 1941, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie by the Rev. A.
F. Vomhof.
The Schmidts enjoyed farming together in the early years.
Mr. Schmidt loved to be outdoors whether it was hunting, fishing or being
in the garden. He enjoyed sitting down and reading a good book. He also
had a talent for cooking, which he used to make sure there was always plenty
of food for everyone. Mr. Schmidt sang in the church choir for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Edna of Lester Prairie and
currently Winsted; children, Jean Birkholz of St. Paul, Wesley (Lois) Schmidt
of Lester Prairie, and Deb (Earl) Heldt of Lester Prairie; grandchildren,
Terrese Birkholz (fiance Chad Norman) of Robbinsdale, Rebecca Birkholz of
Oakdale, Jennifer (Clayton Jr.) Quast of Brainerd, Rebecca (Jerry) VonBerge
of Byron, Rachel and Craig Schmidt of Lester Prairie, Mandy (Jason) Sturges
of Hutchinson, Melanie Heldt of Eagan, and Justin and Jared Heldt of Lester
Prairie; great-grandchildren, Jessica Thompson, Jordan Thompson, Joscelyn
Woods, DeJuan Woods, Tyler Quast, Zachary Quast, Dillon VonBerge, Kelsey
VonBerge, Ashley VonBerge and Connor Sturges; brothers and sisters, Emily
Bergmann of Glencoe, John (Wilma) Schmidt of Glencoe, Ann Ulrich of Hutchinson,
Martha Stoeckman of Glencoe and Victor (Harriet) Schmidt of Hutchinson;
as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; siblings, Elsie
Schmidt, Herman Schmidt, Walter Schmidt, Dorothea Vollmer, Henry Schmidt
Jr. and Fred and Verna Schmidt; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Walter and
Vinnetta Tonn, Earl “Pete” Bergmann, Ernie Stoeckman and Donald
Ulrich; and nephew, Mylon Tonn.
Arrangements were with the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel
in Lester Prairie.
