Funeral services celebrating the life of Anna Gertrude
Smith, 98, of Norwood Young America (NYA) were held Wednesday, April 3,
from St. Paul’s Evangelical Reformed Church of Hamburg. Officiating was
the Rev. Henry P. Bowen.
Mrs. Smith died on Friday, March 29, 2002, at the Arlington
Good Samaritan Center.
The organist was Sandy Kroells. The congregational hymns
were “Abide With Me,” “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”
and “Jesus Lives And So Shall I.”
Pallbearers were Michael Personius, James Ische Jr., Benjamin
Ische, Gary Wessling, John Trocke and Jeremy Smith. Interment was in the
church cemetery.
Anna Gertrude Kamann was born to Peter and Katherine (Peschken)
Kamann on April 3, 1903, in Benton Township of Carver County. She was baptized
on May 17, 1903, at St. John’s Church of Bongards by the Rev. Rosenau. She
attended country school close to their home.
On April 1, 1917, she was confirmed in the faith at St.
John’s by the Rev. Rosenau.
The Rev. Rosenau later united her in marriage with Edwin
William Smith at St. John’s on July 9, 1925. The first two years of their
marriage was spent living at his parents’ farm in Washington Lake Township
of Sibley County.
They then moved to land just east of his parents where
they farmed until 1975 when they purchased a home in NYA. The couple had
lived in Westview Acres and a short time with their son’s family until entering
nursing home care.
Mr. Smith died in March 1996 at the age of 92 years. Mrs.
Smith had been a resident of the Arlington Good Samaritan Center since 1996.
She had been a member of the Women’s Guild at St. Paul’s
Evangelical Reformed Church.
Mrs. Smith enjoyed visiting with family and friends, gardening,
playing cards and spending time with her many grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Muriel Ische of NYA, Gerald
“Perry” (Jackie) Smith of Chandler, Ariz.; grandchildren, Judy
Personius of Rosemount, Jim (Pam) Ische of NYA, Lisa (Gary) Wessling of
Winsted, Lori (John) Trocke of NYA, Lennie (Cory) Albers of Silver Lake,
Jeremy Smith of San Diego, Calif.; great grandchildren, Teresa Buesgens,
Michael (Julie) Personius, Laura Jenkins, Anna (Mark) Boegeman, Christina
Ische, James (Jean) Ische Jr., Benjamin Ische, Jessie Ische, Eddie Wessling,
Ellie Wessling, Erica Wessling, Lydia Trocke and Jacob Albers; great-great-grandchildren,
Spencer Buesgens, Rachel, Daniel, Abigail, Samuel and Lydia Personius, Luke
and Jacob Jenkins, Amanda Boegeman, Robert Ische; sister, Lydia Glander;
brother, George Kamann; brother-in-law, Albert Smith; as well as many nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Edwin;
son-in-law, Melvin Ische; grandson-in-law, Dennis Personius; brothers, Harvey,
Henry and Herman Kamann; and sister, Hilma Kamps.
Arrangements were with the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel
in NYA.
