Hilton Stender
Hilton Stender, age 82, of Winsted, and formerly of Watertown,
died Friday evening, May 24, 2002, at St. Mary’s Care Center.
He was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Hollywood Township, Carver
County, the son of Adolph and Clara Schwartz Stender.
Hilton was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hollywood
Township, New Germany, Feb. 15, 1920.
He was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed
in the Christian faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hollywood Township,
New Germany, April 14, 1935.
Hilton farmed near Watertown for many years. He later worked
at Ed’s Nursery in Howard Lake.
He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church
in Winsted.
Through the years, Hilton enjoyed fishing.
Hilton was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and
Clara Stender; a brother, Norman Stender; and sisters, Malinda Kassulker,
Eileen Mielke, Adelhaid Mielke.
He is survived by a sister, Irene C. Gatz of Winsted; a
brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ortwin and Lorraine Mielke of Wisconsin;
nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services for Hilton Stender were Tuesday, May 28,
at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted. The Rev.
Gerald L. Boldt officiated, and interment followed at the Winsted Public
Cemetery.
Kay Knutson was the organist for the funeral service. “What
a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “I’m But a Stranger Here,” and
“Abide with Me! Fast Falls the Eventide” were sung as congregational
hymns.
Casketbearers were Chuck Schuft, Lyle Oestreich, Steve
Stieve, and Dale Gatz.
The Chilson Funeral Chapel in Winsted served the family.
