Donald Frederick Westphal
Donald Frederick Westphal, age 81, a life-long resident
of Howard Lake, passed away Monday, April 15, 2002.
Don was born to Frederick and Mabel (Jestus) Westphal Oct.
18, 1920, in Howard Lake. He was baptized by the Rev. A. L. Oetjen Nov.
14, 1920, at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake.
Don was confirmed by the Rev. C.G. Selz April 9, 1933,
at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake. He married Shirley Jane Bowen
March 14, 1943, at Cokato Lutheran Church by the Rev. Paul H. Andreen. To
this union three children were born.
Don attended school in Howard Lake and graduated from Howard
Lake High School May 28, 1940. After high school, Don went to Alaska and
worked on the construction of the Alcan Highway. He had a lifelong affection
of the experience. He returned home and worked construction with his father
for a few years.
Don then wet to work as a sales representative for Munson
Feeds for the next 38 years. He retired in 1986.
Don was an active member of St. Johns Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed being an integral part of building the “old church”
and his role on the calling committee.
He was a member of the Howard Lake Fire Department for
many years and was a proud member of the retired firemen. He was active
in the Boy Scouts of America and athletic programs in and around Howard
Lake as a participant and booster.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Don is survived by his wife, Shirley of Howard Lake; one
daughter, Genell K. Reese, Howard Lake; and his two sons, Bruce (Bobbi)
of Great Falls, Mont. and Jerrod (Ann) of Milaca.
His pride and joy were his seven grandchildren: Christopher
Westphal of Great Falls, Mont.; Jason Westphal of Grand Forks, N.D.; Chad
(Nia) Westphal of Alconbury Air Force Base, England; Amanda (Robert) Chambers
of Carson City, Nev.; John Reese of Howard Lake; and Ashley and Lindsey
Westphal of Milaca.
He is further survived by one sister, Eleanore Sexton of
Clearwater; two brothers, Wilfred (Mary) Westphal of Baxter, Minn.; and
Roger (Lois) Westphal of Annandale.
Services were Friday, April 19, 2002, at St. Johns Lutheran
Church, with the Rev. Joel Swedberg officiating. Music was provided by Grant
Judd and Dawn Kalvig.
Pallbearers were Bill Westphal, John Westphal, Wayne Westphal,
Bob Munson, Ray Munson, and Tom Bowen.
Honorary pallbearers were the retired and active Howard
Lake Fire Department.
