Lorna D. Birkholz

Lorna D. Birkholz, age 81, of Lester Prairie, passed away Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at the Richfield Health Center after battling cancer.

Lorna Dorothy (Huepenbecker) Birkholz was born in Helen Township March 6, 1921, the daughter of William and Amanda (Graupmann) Huepenbecker. She was baptized as an infant at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Plato, and confirmed at the same church April 14, 1935, by Rev. J.H. Bunge.

Lorna grew up on a farm near Plato, and attended Stevens Seminary in Glencoe, where she graduated June 2, 1039.

She was united in marriage to Martin H. Birkholz at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Plato by Rev. J.H. Bunge. They made their home in Lester Prairie, where Lorna raised her eight children and has lived ever since.

Lorna has been a long time member at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Her hobbies included watching game shows on TV, reading, caring for her immaculate yard, eating chocolate, traveling occasionally, and most of all taking pride in her children and grandchildren.

Lorna was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Martin who died in April of 1982.

She is survived by three sons and five daughters: Marilyn (Richard) Remer of Savage, Barbara (Harlan) Harms of Prior Lake, Roger Birkholz of Atlanta, Ga., Margaret "Peggy" (Michael) Schons of Savage, Kevin (Cheryl) Birkholz of Oakdale, Calif., Suzanne (Nicholas) Baden of Sauk Rapids, Sandra (Brian) Engel of Eden Prairie, and Jeffrey (Lisa) Birkholz of Maple Grove.

She is further survived by 19 grandchildren: Melissa Catani, Steven Remer, Laurie Jerde, Michael Harms, Brian Harms, Erin Harms, Carissa Birkholz, Bradley Birkholz, Stacey Birkholz,

Allison Schons, Natalie Schons, Bethany Birkholz, Rebecca Birkholz, Robert Baden, Kaitlyn Baden, Brooke Engel, Scott Engel, Andrew Birkholz, and Joshua Birkholz,

Five great-grandchildren: Andrew Remer, Jessica Clipper, Blake Remer, Dominic Catani, and Nicholas Harms; two brothers and two sisters: Hilda Oelfke of Arlington, Frederick (Mavis) Huepenbecker of Glencoe, Elwood (Doris) Huepenbecker of Turtle Lake, Wis.,, and Doris (Orville) Schrupp of Plato; sister-in-law Ella Fruetel of Glencoe, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Visitation was Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.

Funeral services for Lorna D. Birkholz took place Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 at 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with Rev. Grant Bode officiating.

Jane Holasek was the organist, and the congregation sang "How Great Thou Art," "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," and "Nearer My God To Thee."

Steven Remer, Michael Harms, Brian Harms, Bradley Birkholz, Robert Baden, Scott Engel, Andrew Birkholz, and Joshua Birkholz served as casketbearers.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were made by the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.
