Erna Diers, 12/30/2003


Erna Diers was born Nov. 17, 1916 in rural Maple Lake,
the daughter of Paul and Clara (Zeidler) Uecker.
She was baptized Dec. 14, 1916 by the Rev. Alfred Steufert
at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Annandale, and confirmed in her faith at that
same church April 14, 1930 by the Rev. Streufert.
She was united in marriage to Vernon Diers April 15, 1936
at St. James Lutherna Church, Howard Lake, by the Rev. C.G. Seltz. This
union was blessed with two children.
They made their home and living on a farm south of Howard
Lake. Erna also worked at the local SuperValu store in Howard Lake.
She was active in her church and community. Erna was a
member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and served on the church’s
board of evangelism. As a member of the Martha Guild, she was one of the
instrumental members who assisted in the publishing and sale of the red
St. James Cookbook.
The local 4-H club was also important too her and she served
as a 4-H leader.
While a resident at the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Care
Center, she was called to her eternal rest Dec. 30, 2003 at the age of 87
years, one month, and 13 days.
Erna was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Clara
Uecker, husband Vernon, daughter Judy Schmieg, sisters Viola and Alice,
brother Melvin, and granddaughter Christa.
She is survived by her son Gerald (Karen) Diers, sister
Eldora (Hillard) Stapel, brother-in-law Elroy (Evelyn) Diers, son-in-law
Gary Schmieg, grandchildren Jenelle (Morris) Medlang, Michael (Theresa)
Schmieg, Barbara (Ronald) Krueger, Robert (Rhonda) Schmieg, Kimberly (Greg)
Rokala, Jody (Jon) Schendel, Jacob Diers, Joshua (Nicki) Diers, Nicole Diers,
and Emily Diers, 23 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at St. James
Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, with the Rev. Michael Nirva and the Rev. Martin
Schoenfeld officiating. The organist was Nancy Butterfass with special music
by the LWML ladies choir.
Casketbearers were Jacob Diers, Joshua Diers, Michael Schmieg,
Robert Schmieg, Joel Diers, and Alan Stapel.
Interment was at the Howard Lake Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home
of Howard Lake
